I believe that copyright was supposed to protect the creators over their inventions. So, others cannot claim or exploit the inventions for their own benefit. However since Lovecraft already dead and (as far I know) childless, I think it's for protecting the publisher instead.

I do try my best for paying and not pirating. However, it's suck to realize that the price for original works are way too expensive. Not mention around half of the sales profit goes to the publisher (or distributors).

Anyway my newest recite:

I just meet Death yesterday. He's a giant black bird. Each feathers fallen become hawks to follow us.
