I watched a health show on TV where an eminent doctor said putting on some weight was less bad for you than smoking. Your doctor sounds like he just wants you to feel bad.

I googled : "What's worse - weight gain or smoking?" I saw a number of articles. On my new smart phone, I don't know how to copy and paste. But check it out. The articles tend to kind of avoid the question by saying that smoking doesn't have to lead to more than a slight gain in weight. I realize that for many people the weight gain can be substantial. I haven't found an article that really compares the risk of substantial weight gain with smoking.

I've never, ever heard any health expert advocate smoking as a technique for weight control. I think your doctor is being irresponsible. I think his remark was crazy.

He's said other off-the-wall things to you, if I remember rightly. I wish you could see a different doctor.
