I had a friend who was prescribed metformin for weight loss. It is normally used to treat diabetes, but apparently can also be used for weight loss. You could try asking your doctor about it.

If walking is too painful, is there anyway you could get access to a pool and try swimming? It is excellent exercise and much easier on the joints.
