I believe that exercise can cause water gain. I am not sure how but my best guess is that the muscles use water in the repair process. And you don't have to be killing your self. micro repairs are enough for your body to hold on to some water.

I always gain weight when I start exercising. I also think that if you exercise regularly -- 3 x per week - your body keeps the water around.
