not sure but I believe the new over haul of foodstamps as a whole nation wide program everyone on food stamps has to have either a phone interview or an in person interview on a yearly basis regardless of if there are any changes. this is due to scammers and relatives not reporting deaths of those receiving the food stamps and instead using them, and because many people tend to forget to report things like SSI/SSDI and under the table earnings. food stamps also now does a random draw of names thing where they already know SSI/SSDI automatically increases every year (cost of living) this Cost of living increase is always a public thing where Social security notifies the public and other government agencies that an increase is happening. they dont have to wait for their clients to call and say my check is increasing january 1st. they already know it is.

many people get a foodstamp recertification letter in december that they have a recert date sometime in January and what paperwork to bring.

sometimes the recert letter will say something like .... there is no reason to call us that your SSI/SSDI is increasing we already know that.

other times they call the person and say something like we know your SSI is going to increase in january so please comein on this date for your interview recertification.

question did you have a recert since January 2018, if not that may be why they are calling you. because for 12 months you didnt report your income change and they hadnt required a recert after the increase happened. sometimes people do forget to report the increase every january.

my suggestion just go do the interview and be honest about why you didnt report any extra income that they didnt know about until now.

to find out about how things work for your own food stamps you will need to contact your caseworker who can explain how and why they are requiring you to do this if their reason you now have doesnt fit or you dont understand the process.
