Do you get back pay for the mandatory 5 month waiting period after being approved for SSDI?

Also,about back pay in general,how is that determined?

My husband applied for SSDI last year and got his approval letter the next month, since he was approved like right away,will he receive any back pay at all?Will he get a small amount for the weeks from the time he applied to when he was approved?
