Whether it gets you heart rate up depends on the form. There are fast forms, and forms with lots of high kicks, and in Chinese classes there is a lot of sparring. Chen is a form with very fast energy releasing moves; it's also practised very low so lots of aching leg muscles. Wu has kicks in every direction and turning kicks: also has sword forms.
Chinese teachers are almost all martial arts trained.
It's not "a workout" lol - it's a Taoist discipline which is hard work if you learn it right.
Look up the various "Wudang" videos and you will see that the Taoist disciplines of tai chi and wushu are very physically demanding indeed.
