When I was prescribed diazepam my doctor only gave me 14 tablets and told me only to use them when things were bad. He said sometimes just knowing you had the backup would help.

Took me 9 months to use them in the end.

Of course it might be different if you have to rely more heavily on them but as I said in my previous post an SSRI really worked well for me.
