I've had hypnosis several times over the years for various things and always found it relaxing in a way most other techniques aren't, I suppose because you are encouraged to go inward and access a deeper level of consciousness than usual.
One tape I was given started out with having you relax and close your eyes, then start imagining you were descending 10 steps into an underground room. You could visualize light there if you wanted, didn't have to be total darkness. There was something especially soothing about that image, and when you got deep enough sometimes you could access the roots of things that were troubling you in your daily life and try to reprogram them.
If you're interested, ask around or look on the Net for a reputable hypnotist and give it a try, I say.
