if anyone else has issues with this forum sending notifications on firefox (which prevents you from logging in), I now have the solution

log in with IE (which doesn't have issues with the notifications)

clear the notifications in your profile while you're logged in, log back off, then log in to firefox
thee info is obviously still in your profile, but ta-da, you cleared the little bar at the top and can log in fine
