Pfrog, I believe worse case scenario is not unusual given your current situation. Something that, some times, helps me is to focus on what I can control in the situation. The feeling of being in control of something can help me get a handle on the panic. I will confess that it doesn't always work. I'll be freaked out with worry and tell myself to sod off with talk about control.
