Is meth use common with certain mental illnesses or personality disorder?
For example, I am bipolar and weed slows me down. __________________ "I get knocked down, but I get up again..." Bipolar 1 |

I read one stat that said 60% of bipolar patients will have at least one instance of substance abuse at some point and 30% are abusing at least one substance at any given time. I suspect it is even worse for the undiagnosed/untreated. My last drug of choice was adderall and also alcohol. I would have preferred weed but I steer clear of illegal (and it is where I am) drugs now. My pdoc tells me my "way back in the day" illegal drug use was self medicating and I preferred euphorics and psychedelics.
I spend a lot more time depressed than manic (or in my case, hypomanic), so a euphoric to make me feel better or speed (which is what adderall and meth are) to kick me into my own euphoria are what appeal to me. Anyway, I suspect the answer to your question is depression, whether it is unipolar or bipolar. Within bipolar patients, I would expect it to be more prevalent among type II patients as we are not just less afraid of mania but often attracted to it. __________________ | |Up and down |And in the end it's only round and round |Pink Floyd - Us and Them | |bipolar II, substance use disorder, ADD |lamictal, straterra | |

See and I get more manic ,so I hate coke and stimulants. Never tried meth and don't want to.
I like marijuana because some strains calm me down, some rev me up to make me more active. __________________ "I get knocked down, but I get up again..." Bipolar 1 |

I use a black market "speed type" drug just about every day for almost 3 yrs bec of my depression. It gets me out of bed & living.
I do take breaks from it bec of tolerance issues. I was prescribed concerta & got hooked on it & loved it. If there's something out there that can relieve this agony I'll take it. Or try it. Meth, tried it & hated it. Remember crying bec I was so tired & my brain wouldn't shut up. Meth is just messed up. End. __________________ "Doubt is like dye. I don't know how common it is, but I started using as a means to cope with mental illness. I have borderline personality disorder. I am ashamed at myself. Really need to stop using, at least kick meth to the curb.

Can do relate. Meth had been a coping mechanism for me in the past, amongst other things. I’m glad to hear that you haven’t used it. I did recently read an interesting article that I’d like to share with you. Can I PM the article to you, jess Lynn
