Hi, I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong group, I wasn't sure where else to put it.

I was hoping to talk to others with impulse control disorders. I have pyromania, and though I've been clean for a few months now (7! I'm very proud of myself!) I've been getting strong urges again that are very hard to resist.

What are your experiences with impulse control dificulties? And does anyone have any tips to help resist the impulses? Personally, I've locked all my lighters and matches and other firestarters in a safe that only my friend knows the combo for. My current problem is with the gas stove and the fact that i can buy more lighters a block from my house for 50 cents.

If there is a more appropriate place I should have posted this, please tell me! I'll delete it as soon as possible and post somewhere else.

Congratulations on 7 months! That’s wonderful! I’m going to say that retraining your brain new behaviors and thinking through the potential outcome of a situation would be a way to resist impulses.
For me, when I get urges to drink, I think about the things I’ve damaged in my life and my loved ones lives by drinking. That usually stops the urge.
I wish you the best.

This may sound stupid.....
What about taking up art. coloring or painting red fires houses going up in smoke. you have control of what you draw or paint and maybe use really big paper.
just a thought that came to me. markers would work too.

I've tried this before! It is really a hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes it really helps, and sometimes the urged amplify. But it does feel good, either way. Thank you!

Thats very helpful, thank you! I haven't hurt anyone directly, but I do worry about my dog when my place gets smoky, so I can use that I think.
Thank you so much! Good luck!

Get you a fire pit and burn outside, controlled. That's what I do. I love fire. It's my spirit. The best way to deal with impulses is to focus and channel them positively with minimal harm. I have a bunch of mesquite trees in my yard that I'm constantly chopping up and sawing and burning. It's healthy.

i would absolutely do this, except i live in an apartment in a big city. sometimes i will make a fire pit in a parking lot occasionally, though. I agree with you, burning things in a positive way with little harm really helps.

The only other healthy way is through a small burn bowl you can use for paper and small items for spell casting. I can explain more if your interested. It's quite therapeutic.

Thanks for your posts. This is not a most discussed subject anywhere. I will do my best to help. Doing what you're trying to do by looking up your matches. Good work. My suggestion is to watch a YouTube video called Pyromania. It is an education video. Myself has served nearly 10 years for 10 Arson Convictions in and out here in Canada. From 91-2004 I was in and out of jails and penitentiaries for setting fires. My last stretch was a sentence of nine years (01-10) for a hotel fire. Rage was my motive. I was put on trial for my life on something called dangerous offenders law similar to the United States three strikes law. Don't let it get to that point.

Hey! I definitely have impulse control problems, which only got worse during/after active addiction. My impulse control is more to do with extreme rage.
