My father was an alcoholic and I grew up with that my entire childhood, until I moved out of the house at 19...I was let down by him my entire life and in almost every relationship. This last relationship, I was going through a non stop roller coaster. He has an alcohol addiction issue, as well as smoking cigs and weed..we broke up after less than 6-months because I couldn’t handle him always putting alcohol first, then having to deal with his blackouts...he would flake out on me a lot because he would end up hanging with friends who would support his habit. I have tried being friends with him, but It’s too painful to watch him destroy his life..he goes on binges for 2-4 days, works from home almost half the work week so it’s easy. Then when he sobers up, reality hits and he is talking about all these changes he wants to make which rarely happens and if it does it’s short lived.

Have you considered going to couple of al anon and Acoa meetings in your area? You once again focusing on what he does and why and not on what you do and why and how to fix it. You still preoccupied with fixing him, not yourself

Good for you in recognizing his problems and not tolerating it or subjecting yourself to it further.

I think you are a very wise and very brave person, Gymgirl!

You certainly deserve better than what life has given you.

Wish I knew some good advice to offer you but sadly I don't.

Hopefully you will find some way to find peace of mind regarding the situation you described.

I can certainly identify with what you wrote about your father from my own unhappy personal experience.

Best to you! - Yaowen
