My father was a drunk. and also a nasty, angry person. I stayed away from drinking for a long time because i didn't want to be like him. It didn't work.

Then I started drinking in moderation, and it didn't do me any harm.

So it occurs to me. Maybe the old man never actually had any propensity to alcoholism as such. Maybe something drove him to drink. Some pre-existing misery. I don't have much reliable information, because that's how things go in certain families. But there are vague hints of medical problems that might not be alcohol related. And his side of the family, well... it wasn't quite right. They were all slightly odd in ways that were not charming.

And I've got an autoimmune problem with a genetic marker.

Add to this that my mother was the sort of woman who drives men to drink.

There are two types of problem drinkers: those who have problems because they drink, and those who drink because they have problems. I'm not sure which one he was.

I think these two go hand-in-hand so its actually just one type of drinker.

I think people have different kind of things they do to deal with stress. It could be drinking, I think. It's unfortunate that what's he chose. (My opinion)

There is a genetic connection with alcoholism too, I read. SO, please be careful.

Welcome to Psych Central! I'm glad you're here.

One of the things I learned by listening and getting to know different recovering alcoholics is many of them struggle with adhd and found the alcohol seemed to level them out. Some individuals had ptsd and used the alcohol to self medicate so they could avoid the discomfort and challenges that present with ptsd. A lot of war vets who struggled with returning to civilian like became alcohols as a way to deal with their bad experiences from the war. That's what my father did, became a binge alcoholic. My father really never got over all he experienced and saw in WWII. His father was an alcoholic too, a mean drunk. His father served in both WWI and WWII.

I think it's also a biological issue where your body lacks certain vitamins and minerals leaving you susceptible to addictive personalities. We often adopt our eating styles from our parents so if they present themselves with different forms of addictions, they, too, could be lacking proper nutrients in which gets passed on to their offsprings .. if that makes any sense.

About my personal risk of alcoholism: I figure if I can go a week without a drink and without wanting a drink, that's a good sign. And this lockdown business eliminates any social drinking.

I have fatty liver disease and cirrhosis but from psych meds not being an alcoholic. My dad is an alcoholic and has been most of his adult life. I do not know how much he drinks now as he lives in another state. Sometimes when I call him he doesn't seem quite right and my sister- also is not an alcoholic- says the same and has seen him in very bad states in the hospital. Several years ago now he went on a "brothers weekend" and ended up in horrid withdrawal because he just stopped drinking cold turkey for the trip. I'll spare you the details.
