Hi. I get in trouble a lot with my parents for lying. I lied a lot as a child and I lie a lot now. I "have no trouble lying" as my dad's girlfriend put is. This is true. I am also very lazy and have little work ethic because responsibilities just seem pointless. I once stole 80 dollars from my parents in an attempt to run away fro home because I was experiencing a depressive episode. I steal money from my parents now too. Not much, just a few quarters off their dresser so I can go down the convenience store and buy myself a quick snack. Not enough to get caught. I know I don't care about other people as much as other people. My dad's girlfriend cares way too much about other people and then wonders why she's so stressed, it's annoying. I only feel guilty if I get caught, and I would kill if I knew I could get away with it. I admire people who get away with things because it means they're smart. I am basicallly a pathological liar and lying comes so naturally tome it's like an instinct. It's a habit that I will likely never break, and I don't want to. As long as lying gets me out of trouble I will continue doing it. If I could get away with stealing from my parents again, I would do it. But last time I stole the money my parents locked their bedroom door. Does this mean I'm a psychopath? I also have a strong desire to be away fro everyone and live an isolated lifestyle because people don't understand me and they're boring and too preoccupied with others. My parents worry abiout me so much and it's really annoying.

Hello badusername: I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral. I'm sorry we here on PC can't offer mental health diagnoses. So we can't tell you whether or not you could be diagnosed as having antisocial personality disorder. For this you would need to see a mental health professional. However, reading through the various posts in the AsPD sub-forum, as well as the other Personality Place sub-forums, may help you to get a better handle on what may be going on with you.

One other thing you can do is to take some of the quizzes & tests that are on offer here on PC. Here are links to 2 listings of the quizzes & tests that are available:

Psychological Quizzes and Tests

Personality Tests

And then here are links to 3 articles, from PsychCentral's archives, that discuss AsPD & also compare it to other personality disorders. The 4th article is an "Ask the Therapist" column where a 19 year old wrote in asking if he might possibly have AsPD:

Antisocial Personality Disorder Symptoms

Comparing Narcissism to Antisocial Personality Disorder | The Recovery Expert

What's the difference between a narcissist, sociopath, and borderline? | The Recovery Expert

Do I Have Antisocial Personality Disorder? | Ask the Therapist

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

It's kinda hard to know whether or not you're a psychopath/sociopath or just ASPD - as there is a distinction between all these terms.

Psychopathy (primary psychopath) is said to be genetics-driven, then a psychopath is born a psychopath. This makes them (almost) impossible to feel what others may feel, since they never experienced emotions such as romantic love or sadness (for anyone else). Sociopaths (secondary psychopaths) are, usually, made by the environment: a childhood trauma, abuse, neglect and such. Since the sociopath has been able to feel emotions, even if while being too young, he's able to feel some emotions a psychopath, normally, can't. But these emotions are short and empty. Antisocial people suffer from ASPD, which can be either genetic or made by the environment (and some theories say sociopathy and ASPD are caused by both genetics and environment). Antisocials tend to engage in criminal behaviour, lack a concern for others and remorse and guilt.

Psychopaths, sociopaths and antisocials are all really prone to boredom - which is one of the main reasons why they engage in criminal behaviour and take many useless (and not only useless) risks. Most sociopaths suffer from ASPD, while psychopaths don't tend to suffer from ASPD (they can still be considered "antisocial"). By what you said, Socio/psychopaths and antisocials tend to tell lies and engage in criminal behaviour, but that doesn't mean everyone who tell lies frequently and engage in criminal behaviour are all psychopaths. Maybe you should check some information about them and take some online tests, mainly for orientation.

The only thing I will add is to keep in mind that “psychopath” is not a diagnosis. It’s a label, but you cannot be diagnosed as a psychopath.

I don’t know if you are or not. I don’t know how old you are or anything about you. Maybe you just need to get off your butt, get a job, and take some responsibility for yourself. Or maybe you’re a psychopath. Who knows?
