Why is it that the doctors dont seem to get anxieties with agoraphobia? I have told my doctor time and time again I cannot come to see her because I have agoraphobia really bad which is true, Now she says she understands but clearly she doesnt. Why dont doctors seem to get our phobias? They seem to think we are making them up. Hardly. If I could go out I would but I just cannot make an appointment when they want. She said she gets it that is bull.I have told her numerous times that I just cannot get into a car when she feels like it. It is not that easy for me, I just dont like going out. Now I dont mind sitting outside during the summer by the way that is a big step for me because only a couple of years ago you would have not found me outside at all, I wish they would read up on anxieties and phobias, they just dont seem to get how scary life can be for us. I am so sick and tired of having to explain myself to them,I often wonder how they would feel if they were scared.

and they absolutely won't. I tried to get covered therapy at my house, at that was double out of the question. There are specialists that hold sessions in private environments(sometimes their own homes). Having been diagnosed with agoraphobia, I am not sure why mine is different than yours. Recently, I had been through a traumatic experience, that was and still is, triggered by everyday activities. Facing your fears is difficult without support. Maybe try scheduling your appointments further apart, different times of the day, different days of the week, until you find one that works with your schedule

I'm so sorry for everyone who is struggling with agoraphobia I imagine that, for a doctor, it must be hard to deal with appointments and such. They probably don't mean any harm - at least I hope so. Still, the problem remains. I'm sorry you have to deal with this

Whenever I see you name I feel bad because of u crying on the inside believe me I know how that feels.Honey I wish I knew how to fix this it is so annoying because the doctors just wont listen and if you have to call to cancel they still arent listening. Here is one for you one time I had to cancel because I was throwing up so when I went to my doctor I had asked her for a note I cannot walk way up to my mailbox because I have a high risk of falling okay she made a stupid comment about how she was going to give me the note when I came to see her but I canceled as I told well I was throwing up and I wasnt about to come here then and I am sure u wouldnt want me vomiting all over the place.she just shook her head, they act like we are lying or something it is to bad we cant call on a day when we are feeling good then go in that day,the anticipatory anxieties that we feel before our appointments are just plain awful.they dont get it I dont think that they even try to get it all they see is dollar signs.

Is there any way your therapist is willing to use Skype or another video call?

It's not unheard of these days for therapists to use video call for their sessions (they use them in the VA all the time). It would atleast be worth enquireing about it and using it as a starting point until you can see them.

Another possibility is to schedule all future appointments way out in advance so you can prepare. You think there's some way you can make therapy happen, without causing so much distress?

another option is.. (and I hate to advertise for a company I am not completely sold on), BetterHelp. For three months, I worked with an online woman counselor through written/e-mail communication. She was not asked to diagnose me, but talking with her in my own time was beneficial for me. The website is set up to conveniently schedule different kinds of appointments (phone, quick chat, secure e-mail), change therapists, join webinars, and easily share worksheets and self-progress check-ins. This site is goal-oriented and allows you to track your own progress. I would recommend taking your time (same as in the real world), find a therapist that suits your needs and build up to a trusting relationship.

A few points I agree on: the difficulty, the reaction. the failure to accommodate.

I have my own trouble getting to my doctor, pdoc, and T appointments. Part of this is my fear to parallel park. I am terrified that the street the offices fall on will be packed enough forcing me to do so. I have spent a great deal of money on cab rides. I also am fearful of requesting time off work (I don't wish to trouble them or be a pain if that makes sense) which makes scheduling appointments all that much more difficult. When the day of my appoints arise I panic to the point I throw up. I have simply called in at times with a lame excuse.

I have felt my healthcare team fails to understand these triggers and why it is so difficult for me. Certainly the office workers are part of the problem - admonishing me for not being able to showl. Another dread about appointments.

Sitting in a waiting room is difficult. I worry about what others may be thinking about me.

Whereas the doctors get angry and harp on my failures the T is at least more helpful. When I do miss an appointment she will call me and conduct my session by phone.

I see no reason you own doctor can't accommodate you by doing the same.

Also, is it possible to get an appointment during a less busy time - like first or last thing in the day?

I too struggle with doctor appointments and getting out of the house. If I followed my doctors advice, I would be leaving the house every other day for a while. As it is, I stick to just one day a week. She'll ask why I haven't done a certain thing, and I'll say I just haven't had time. She doesn't understand. She replies, "It's easy." No, it's not.

Hi I just dont k now why the doctors dont understand,it is not easy for a person who has agoraphobia with anxieties,it is bad enough I have them but I get panic attacks to plus I have a mood disorder and bipolar and other depression.I mean what part of do not call dont they seem to understand?Let see them having to go through this and then we will see how they will react and talk.

My is social anxiety disorder, which has deprived me of so many appointments and benefits. I always run away from responsibilities that at the end will fetch me money, I will loose money. I will be shaking and trembling visibly before people will writing these in their presence. And are things I can do calmly alone
