I have general anxiety disorder that can be bad at times but I do have it under control so I can function and work a part time job. I am also on the spectrum and I most likely have traits of selective mutism. It’s gotten kind of bad at work lately and I think people are noticing. I have a couple good friends and I can laugh and joke with them freely. But if a manager comes by, even if I’ve just been laughing I freeze up and basically shut down. I have trouble getting my words out and it’s difficult to talk to them. When they leave I go back to talking with my friends.

One manager never really payed much attention to me before, but now she’s paying a lot of attention to me and not in a bad way. She compliments me and just try’s to have conversations with me. I do my best to talk with her but it’s hard. I think she is just curious about me and I’m wondering how to handle the situation if she starts asking me questions.

Mountaindewed, I can relate and it is difficult to talk to managers since they can seem intimidating. Maybe try to say hi, how are you today? Then smile and compliment them on the new shirt they have on or if there is any common ground you have then can discuss that. I’m often not good at talking to persons in authority and often just say “hi” and smile.
