I am 44 and have had anxiety ever since early elementary school (at least as long as I can remember). I have been on different medications and have tried different therapies. I have recently tried DBT, but was unable to continue with my work schedule. Whenever my panic would come on (from out of nowhere it seemed), I felt I couldn’t even think of my tools to use. This has affected all areas of my life. I have been hospitalized too. I don’t know if a medication adjustment is needed and trying more DBT or what.

Hi Ne1Man, I don't know that TMS will help with anxiety. I have only ever heard of it used for depression, which is what I did it for (although I also have GAD). I'd also say, in my experience, medication doesn't cure anxiety, just masks it or curbs it. Therapy is really needed to retrain your brain. That could be CBT, DBT, or other forms, or a combination. One thing I would suggest is saying to your therapist: I need you to help me build coping skills for my anxiety and also retrain my brain to not overreact to triggering stimulus.
It really is a lot of work to recover from an anxiety disorder (or any disorder) and I commend you for trying so hard. You mentioned that when you have panic attacks you can't think of the tools to use, I wonder if you could make a list in your phone so you don't have to remember them, just pull open the note on your phone of what works for you? Hi Ne1Man, have you considered music or art therapy for your anxiety? I have been hand drumming off and on for 20 years and notice that when I regularly attend drum classes, my anxiety levels decrease and I stop having panic attacks. I also notice less anxiety and panic attacks when I avoid fried and fatty foods and processed sugar. I've done DBT and CBT and both have helped. I've never tried TMS. What about medical cannabis or CBD oil? I hear that reduces anxiety and panic attack symptoms. Maybe investigate those routes too.
Are you on multiple SSRI's? Those could be causing you more anxiety and panic attacks as medication side effects. You're going through a very stressful life transition right now, so your anxiety and depression is a totally understandable, normal reaction. Look into getting a roommate situation with your friend just temporarily until you get re-established back in your community. Hang in there! |

Thank you both. I agree on both of them. Retraining my brain will be vital. My diet will be too. Going to try some small walks as well as meditation and gratitude.
