I am no wilting violet. In my 20s I lived in Michigan where there were Tornado warnings all night long. I lived on the top floor of a poorly built apartment with no storm shelter. So I have been through some stressful times, storm wise.

But lately it seems storms are so much more severe where I am. I moved to a new town about 20 minutes away from the older one. And since being here the next door neighbor's house was struck... and that was traumatic because they didn't get back into their house for a year afterward.

So this Wednesday night we had terrible storms. The line set up over my house and the storms went from south to north not west to east... so.. they were not over quickly. I have to tell you... I have never ever seen such lighting. It woke me up which is scary enough but the thunder honestly felt like an earthquake not thunder. It was loud enough to shake the house.

For the first time ever-- EVER -- I got dressed and grabbed my keys and was ready to run out of the house. The lighting was deep and bombastically loud but also it was one right after the other.. no break, I just struggled to make it down the stairs. After about 45 minutes the insane stuff was calmer but it was pretty severe for about 3 hours more. 45 minutes of excessively loud and frequent lighting.

My poor cat wailed with terror and there was nothing I could do. I was pretty terrorized myself. But it got me that there was nothing I could do for him.

All day long the next day and today I am literally jumping if a loud noise is made. I do really feel sort of depressed and anxious like I don't think I can go through such a thing again.

Of course kitty doesn't have a care in the world.

Thanks for sharing this frightful experience. I wrote you a whole long reply regarding some storm-related experiences I've had. But then PC summarily kicked my butt off the website & I lost it all. (Not the first time that has happened, nor probably the last.) And, lacking the energy to recreate it all, all I can say is...

I am so sorry you experienced this. It seems storms are getting more and more intense in recent days. The other night there was a flash of lightning and the thunderstorm was so severe, my power kept going in and out and it left me in utter darkness. I have never been so scared in all my life.

I can empathize with you, and your kitty because it really is frightening. I have no advice to give because I was just as scared, my only hope is these storms won't be so bad in the future.

Do you have a basement?

Your local power company should have on its website information on what to do if there is a power outage. The same could be used for a bad thunderstorm or tornado warning.

Probably is not the best idea to go outside!

Yes thankfully for the first time in my life I have a basement. My concern was the house getting struck by lighting and a subsequent potential fire. My car is parked feet from my front door so it would have been seconds to the car. As I mentioned this just happened to a neighbor (house struck by lighting) and even though they were all ok their house was so messed up they had to live in a trailer for year.

Same here-- thanks, I don't know if it is a larger issue or just where I have moved to. It seems like where I am is the point where the jet stream hits the cold air from the ocean. Winter can be insane as well.

Also very frustrating, my area is not set up for storms. In Michigan they had very good radar and they could pin point issues coming. But these storms... horrible. The future cast had these storms not even coming my way, but they did, and the radar photos seemed inaccurate all night. If it was coming down hard here, the radar didn't seem to reflect that.

I am so sorry that you had to go through this.As for me I am so afraid of thunderstorms ,every single time it thunders I just about cry that is how scared I am,I never experienced a tornado but I have heard they sound like a train.Trains dont bother me ,but thunder ouch,Even when the entire sky lights up because of lighting I just want to go and crawl in a hole ,unfortunately where I live there is no protection, not in senior housing. I get so scared when the power goes out.I wonder why storms always seem like they are at night.Right when we have trouble seeing. Sometimes I wish I could stay with someone else but no way not around here.I would have been scared with you.I try to think of it as fireworks but unfortunately my brain wont let me think this way.Thunderstorms never bothered me until a couple of years ago I dont know why they just do.

Ok then maybe they are just worse. They really have been bothering me lately. I always thought of thunderstorms where I am as nothing but lately, at least once per year we have really bad ones.

The weatherman said this week that a couple of days ago the detroit area got a 500-year storm, but a couple of years ago, we got a 1,000 year storm. So - i just figure i'll be dead before it all blows up, or the weather / heat / cold will kill me. Im depressed anyway! Im gonna complain?
