Default Finding your Identity

PLZ HELP

I know, this may seem so cringy to say but I just absolutely feel overwhelmed with myself that I don't know what I like or who I am, etc. Maybe b/ I'm young I'm overreacting but I've had terrible anxiety all my life that I just feel this is a byproduct of my anxiety and that I need to do something about it since I am DONE with feeling like a spectator of my life.

I just go through intense phases, I become a study holic and then I stop abruptly and then fall behind and get depressed. I used to love biology and HATE history but now I don't and think I like history and math more?! I also use to have a passion for art, I use to be THE art kid but I've been in art block for 2 yrs that my skills have degraded and I just don't get genuinely excited to create or see art. I also became crazy for swimming and then I suddenly lost interest a yr ago and now I think I may be gaining traction but IDK for sure? Now I'm suddenly interested in theater and piano which I am taking lessons for piano in. I want to theater TERRIBLY now and I'm thinking about learning how to sing and stuff and when I'm going to apply to Theater programs but then I get super anxious and overthink everyhting!! ANd i just don't know if I really like theater like I thought I liked a bunch of other things or it's a phase. I feel the time is running out to find something I really enjoy b/ university is in a couple of yrs!!

The thing is I have never found something I have stuck w/ and liked truly, NOTHINGGGG. IK that you will change interests when you grow up but this has gotten to the extreme. People say to find who you are you need to find something you like but I don't know what I damn like b/ then I suddenly lose interest in it. I am so desperate to find something where I can let myself go, have fun and begin to build my self worth

I see my peers just having fun with themselves and I've never had that capacity b/ I'm so anxious. And there is a lot of ppl that threw me under the bus, therefore, I so wish to blossom and shock them in how much I improved. Do you know? And I don't mean unrealistically change but just be confident and become the person I know that I can if I had an idea of who I was.

Hello biscottinofiore: Thanks for bringing your concern here to PC. I see this is your first post. So... welcome to Psych Central.

I'm not sure what to tell you about what you wrote in your post. Skipping from one thing to another was always a problem for me as well. But I can't really tell you what the cause of it is. Perhaps what you've been experiencing is something you might consider delving into with the help of a counselor of mental health therapist? From what you wrote it sounds as though you're still in school. Perhaps there's a school counselor you could start with?

I suppose one possibility is that going from one interest to another is a good way to ensure you'll never really fail at anything because you don't stick with one thing long enough for the possibility of failure to rear it's head. And this could be related to your anxiety I suppose. But that's just one possible idea. Perhaps other PC members will have some more insightful suggestions.

Here's a link to an article by our host Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D., from Psych Central's archives, on the subject of anxiety disorders along with 3 additional articles that offer tips for coping with anxiety:
