Ever since I was a kid I believed that knowledge is power. I spent my life in dogged pursuit of that quest and the internet has made that a great deal easier. In fact I have been able to do so much in my life by myself just from watching you tube. You tube can tell me how to install a toilet flapper, or storm door, as it can give me endless work out routines.
But, I can't help.. in the back of my mind .....know that it also makes me unhappy. My nephew is boundlessly happy. And I realize we all do our best not to tell him any actual information because that will "ruin" it for him. I think about how when I was a kid, how happy I was. I spent my day getting up... watching tv, ALL DAY LONG, and day dreaming. I didn't have to do anything.. I didn't have to know anything. Now as an adult I will have to know and do things but I ask myself.. do I have to know everything? Might I be better off 1. Not using the internet that much. 2. Not watching the news. 3. Not being in a position to know anything about my condo (currently on the board) 4. Might I even be happier with people if I didn't know what they were saying was totally wrong? Must the goal be to get more innocent / nieve / trusting? |

Well... this is pretty-much where I've come to. I don't watch the news on TV. I don't read the newspaper. There's nothing I can do about any of it. And hearing about all of it just makes me anxious. I also don't spend a lot of time looking things up on the internet. I don't have any friends or even acquaintances really, by choice. And I'm no longer on our homeowners' association board. (I was for a time a few years back.) I basically live in my own boring little world. I also no longer try to do much of anything in terms of home repairs. There's not a lot to be done anyway. And as I've aged I feel like I've lost much of the ability I used to have to successfully complete do-it-yourself projects around home.
Of course I'm aging & that makes a difference. I don't think I would ever recommend the way I live to a younger person. But I do think one has to temper one's desire to know everything & do everything oneself. One simply can't know everything & do everything oneself. And trying to do so can become little short of a compulsion in my opinion. I think, as the Buddha might perhaps have observed, one has to find a middle way. At least those are my thoughts with regard to your post. __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go." That isn't to say I will just do what they say, however, I will not run back to the office and try to compare and contrast the x-rays. I have to trust a little more in the medical providers. |

Oh also, I enjoy message boards and this doesn't apply to this board because mostly everyone is so supportive. However, I signed up for an LOA board and it has been so unsupportive. I am so bummed at the death of message boards. But the entire thing seems to be a group of people who (1) do not seem able to communicate well, I suspect they can't speak english and (2) Insist that they are the self styled master of everything mystical. Yikes enough of that. Life is too short to listen to one more idiot with a superiority complex.

We cannot know everything. I think the key is learn about the things you love and enjoy your life.

Nothing wrong with admitting that we don't know something!! We have no obligation to know everything about anything! That'd be an ABSURD request! So yes, perhaps a little ignorance IS bliss, as others say... I do feel like it's still important to keep ourselves informed and educated about the major issues in our Lives however! Our health, a little bit of news, things like that! But aside from that, it's YOUR choice what you want to focus on! That's my opinion anyway! Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, @Emily Fox Seaton, your family, your friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Please do keep fighting and do keep rocking as much as you possibly can like you're already WONDERFULLY DOING ALL AND ENTIRELY ON YOUR OWN!!

Simple answer: no, you don't have to know everything. That doesn't mean you can't learn new things, just that you might want to scale back your internet usage and do things the old fashioned way — by struggling.
Besides, like everything else, it probably should be done in moderation. Obviously, that's probably easier said than done in the age of smartphones, but you get the idea. |
