I have a buddy age 52 with ADHD who tells me he cannot get treated with the correct meds as he has had a history of drug/alcohol addiction and cannot be given stimulants or amphetamines. Is this so? And if it is, what can he be treated with?

I always get annoyed when I hear of former addicts being denied adhd treatment with meds due to past addictions. It has been proven over and over that treating someone with adhd lessons the possibility of them using substances and having addictions to other things because they are being treated properly. Untreated adhd is can cause some people to self medicate by using drugs or alcohol to mitigate the symptoms of adhd. Many times if you find a good doctor you can get treatment assuming the doctor knows his or her stuff about adhd.

Thank you Sarah Sweets. Your response got me on board with what is going on with this fellow. I feel awful for him, as he works as a handyman for me and have experienced first hand the toll ADHD is making on him being untreated. Is the reason that docs don't prescribe meds is they're concerned about their own liability? Anyway I've been enlightened from your reply Many thanks.

I think liability is definitely the issue. Doctors have the DEA breathing down their necks and the opiate crisis doesnt help. There are some doctors the will use drug tests to monitor past addict. I dont like that but I suppose if its the only barrier to treatment it may be the way to go. I also know that people that have a past issue with stimulants like meth can struggle with prescription stimulants. Just like a heroin addict would struggle with pain meds. But the option shouldnt be taken off the table just because of that.

This is why I think that all drugs should be legalized and we should be able to buy whichever medications we want. A doctor's job should be to advise us not to be the gatekeepers. Most people given the right incentives will not opt to endanger themselves with indiscriminate drug use and for those who do the black market will always be there. The link between dopamine and ADHD is as inescapable as the dread a practitioner must feel when prescribing dopaminergic drugs so it would be fairer on us and them if we could just buy the stimulants legally and of our own volition.
