Hi everyone!
I was wondering if I could get some opinions and advice over something I’ve been feeling for a very long time. For years I have felt like I have ADHD and what I feel matches with ADHD symptoms. I have problems with concentration such as daydreaming without realizing, handling and processing emotions (like understanding what is going on around me, going from zero to overwhelmed when something doesn’t go as planned, and I was a very emotionally sensitive child), I have trouble making and maintaining friends (school was very hard for me socially and academically), I act and talk impulsively such as cursing and I only realize after acting this way, have a very short term memory, and I fidget a lot and canÂ’t relax (tics are a big part of it). My dad believes he has ADD due to his troubles with concentration, daydreaming, memory, social situations, and sluggishness that he can’t seem to control. Whenever I hear this it matches with someone who has ADD and it makes me wonder if my symptoms are of ADHD (especially since they click). However when I was younger (age 12) (I am 21 now) I got a neuropsychological exam and came back negative with ADHD. This makes me even more confused since they only thing I could find that would match with what I was feeling has been ADHD. I’ve heard that sometimes there can be a misdiagnosis with these exams but I’m not sure if it is true. I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience and if so I would really appreciate it if I can get guidance. I know that to get a diagnosis (whether it is ADHD or something else) I need to talk to a specialist in ADHD but any help here would be appreciated. Thanks for listening! |

Hello Same: I see this is your first post here on PC. Welcome to Psych Central.
I cannot be of any help with regard to your concern. (Perhaps there will be other PC members who will have thoughts they'll wish to share.) In the meantime here's a link to an article, from Psych Central's archives, on the subject of ADHD in adults by our host Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D. The article also provides links to additional articles on the subject: ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Guide | Psych Central I hope you find PC to be of benefit. __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go." Diagnosing ADHD is tough. There are no tests for adhd. There things that lead one to a diagnosis but there are no tests. Have you considered seeing someone now?
