So for years I have noticed that I dont know what to do when people show emotions, i cant emphasize with them. When my kids cry from being upset or hurt i just want them to stop inside but outside i try my best to comfort them but inside i want it to stop. Ampng other things I dont ubderstand social ques or whats appropriate or not in situations. I have been dealing woth this for years so i took the tests on this website and scored a 42. When i saw that score it made sense. And when I read a book about autism it all made sense to me and was relatable. But i dont know who i should see for further tests. A psychiatrist or neurologist?

Hello Zms1: Thank you for bringing your question here to PC. I noticed this is your first post. So... welcome to Psych Central. Since you mentioned being a parent one additional forum, here on PC, that may be of interest to you would be the healthy parenting forum. Here's a link:
https://psychcentralforums.com/healthy-parenting/ I'm sorry I cannot answer your question authoritatively. However I believe the professional you would want to see to be evaluated for autism may be a psychologist. You might be able to be referred to an appropriate professional, though, by a psychiatrist or perhaps your family doctor. Here are links to 2 articles, from Psych Central's archives, that discuss what autism is & how it is diagnosed. Also included is a link to an article that may be of interest on Asperger's syndrome: Autism Overview - What Is It? Is There a Test for It? | Psych Central How Autism is Diagnosed | Psych Central Asperger's Disorder Symptoms, Types & Treatments I hope you find PC to be of benefit. __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go." Try to find a board-certified behavior analyst in your area who specializes in autism spectrum, especially if you’re a woman, because autism tends to look different in women, often radically so. They’ll do extensive testing that takes about a month. You said you’ve been dealing with issues for years, but people are actually born with autism, so you may just be dealing with anxiety or depression, etc. (unless by “for years” you did mean since childhood).

Welcome to PC! A psychiatrist diagnosed me. Look for a psychiatrist or psychologist with autism experience.
