How is autism and aspergers diagnosed in adults? Is it a concern I should bring up to a therapist or will it make me look like I just have health related anxiety?..... I honestly just need answers

Sorry, I can't answer your question how Autism and Aspergers are diagnosed in adults. Diagnosis is something I struggle with too. Living with an undiagnosed problem may be one of the causes of your daily anxiety.

Would recommend asking your therapist and let him or her know your symptoms, oftentimes a parent answers questions about symptoms the person had as a child. Good luck.

Wanting to feel normal is a normal feeling. Talking with a therapist is a good start. Keep posting here too. Group support and group interaction is a nice way to feel normal without labels.

I don't like labels.... I don't really have answers. Posting here can help and so can a good therapist.

I brought it up to my family doctor, who then referred me to a psychologist for an assessment. If you can, I would try to get a referral to a psychologist/psychiatrist who is educated about autism. Not to be too discouraging, but in my experience therapists either don't know anything about the spectrum, have inaccurate assumptions about the spectrum, or will be put off by you identifying something in yourself that they didn't identify. I've yet to find a therapist or social worker who actually knows what autism is, but have had many doctors who were educated and connected to good resources.
And I can empathize with the fear/dislike of labels, but knowing what is and isn't part of your neurology is incredibly liberating. Goodluck <3 |
