Looks good! You carry the color a lot better than many people. You're lucky to have the complexion for it!

I went through a hair dying phase in college, which did in fact coincide with one of my most severe hypomanic phases (probably actually full-blown manic given the amount of trouble I got into...) I went from brown (natural) to obscenely fake stripey gold highlights, to blonde, to red, to auburn, to black. Then I had one of those malibu hair stripping treatments and cut it all off. Never even got around to trying fun colors that I couldn't get in a small town supermarket before I decided that it totally ruins the baby-fine texture of my hair.

After awhile, I realized that my "plain" brown hair is pretty spectacular with natural red and gold highlights. Even the grey still looks like pale gold streaks.

I also have been coloring my hair since i was 15.. Yes i was getting gray at 15 ( both my parents were gray by there mid 20's ) so ii have also been every color under the sun .. right now its just dark brown blackish ,, I have to color mine every 3 weeks because i cant stand seeing the regrowth . Im 44 Im not ready to let it go ,, Id have to shave my head and let the all gray/ wite hair grown in .., ack no cant do it.

And YES I understand the showering thing . ( i do wash up with a washclothe daily if I cant force myself to actually shower or bathe) . i FORCED myself the other day ..Its exhausting to me and then having to blowdry and flat iron my hair so i dont look like a poodle ,,, well you all get what i mean .. sometimes its just not worth the effort...plus its cold was 42 degrees in my house the other day ,, we just cant afford to heat our home . we have 2 small ceramic heaters i take one in the bathroom but its still so damn cold its hard to want to peel off 6 layers of clothes to hop in the bath or shower.

Yea, BlueInanna! It can most certainly be a victory! I struggle a lot with that when I'm depressed too. It's just too much. It's a really big indicator of how badly I'm doing, because I'm normally quite the fan of clean and tidy! Here's the thing: when I take one, I'll always say, "Wow, that's refreshing. Have I ever regretted taking a shower?" "NO!" So why is it so damn hard? Drives me up a wall that I sometimes cannot even force myself to do it.

Hair dyeing. Now there's something I need to bribe myself to do! Love when it's done, just hate actually doing it. Dark brown/cranberry mix which comes off as a deep cranberry/purple-ish look. Heheh.

Soooo hear you on the cold, morethingswrong! I loathe taking warmed layers off, turn on the wall heater, and after toweling off? Use the blow dryer. To really dry off and warm up. Yes, really!

Morethingswrong- can you go somewhere else to shower? Not sure where you live but some places have public places for showers. the YMCA? a friends house? (i could see not wanting to ask a friend though) 42 degrees is too cold!! its not even safe for computers to go below 50, let alone humans!! I have my heat on 55 and it makes a huge difference.

I agree when you are depressed it can be so hard to take care of yourself the way you should. It's hard just for me to get out of bed. Today I worked out for the first time in years. Only a half hour and nothing heavy but I feel really good. I ate a normal meal (no binging and no purging) and I washed the dishes for the first time in a week. Now I am going to take a shower, brush my teeth and maybe even vacuum! Might be a sign of mania coming but I feel good just doing some things for once

there were times I took what is know as "Russian shower" (using more deodorant instead of taking shower. As racist as it sounds, I used this mainly when travelling Eastern Europe... and there are places over there with water shortages. And most Easties laugh at the word).


Dunno, I love showers. I guess, because I experienced water shortages as child (was born to village where we had a well which did not always had enough water) and later on my travels. Add to it nice shower products (I rather give up meals than my shower gels), it gives me the feeling of much needed decandence. Plus living in dorm, shower is good place to cry in.

Little hippie maybe you're just feeling good!!! Congrats on the workout/food/dishes etc. sounds like a productive day. So far I've gone to the gym. But i've been inspired here to do some dishes and vacuum!!! GO us!

Even tho I grew up with running water in America, my parents in Italy did not, and my father was responsible for my care. He used to say that his mother bathed him 3 times, for his christening, for his first communion, and for his wedding (when he was 31?!). So once a week was MORE than enough in his book. I had a major fight with him in 7th grade to be allowed to take a 2nd bath per week and wash my greasy hair. He was concerned my skin would dry out. I was always crowded out of the facilities by my mother and older brother, their needs came first, always. So when I got fired, boy the first thing that happened was I stopped showering. No place to go, no reason to be clean, no one cares about me. Unless i'm seeing T, and even then it's iffy. It's like I AM back to my dark childhood days. I have to construct a whole new different life where I am reasonably cared for, by myself and others.

While I have been de-hoarding the apartment, I have been reporting to T that I start every morning "lifting heavy things" - it's kinda good to break a sweat first thing in the morning. Matthew McConaughey says that's how he stays fit, break a sweat every day. Now to start washing it off!

I remember how hard it was for me to get in the shower...however lately no matter how I feel I try my best to shower everyday because I notice this....I smell better...look better...and guess what feel better ......Depression hurts...and any other mental health issue...taking a shower is a big deal...These little acts of kindness to self tend to improve my mood...although sometimes I can take all the showers I want and Im still sick...Hang in their people...

It seems to be such a pervasive problem. I used to be a religious flosser and now I only brush my teeth once a day, and my dentist tells me to brush and floss twice a day plus if possible floss after lunch.

Almost everyone seems to hate flossing! My hygienist showed me on an X-ray where I was losing bone that helps keep your teeth where they belong from not flossing, which was scary, but not enough to really get me to do it consistently. I now do it every day, almost without fail. You know what worked for me? A social-support online game for developing healthy behaviors: HealthMonth

I've also found that it has helped me to: 1) take meds regularly, 2) moderate drinking, 3) go to bed on time, consistently, and 4) get more exercise. The daily reminder and social accountability, as well as "points" and "life points," however silly and symbolic, really do seem to help reinforce good habits.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but it's one tool that I have found really helpful in trying to reform bad behaviors and reinforce good ones that are helping manage BP.

I can completely understand what your going through with the shower thing. I too find it hard to get up and shower. The depressive side of this disorder is just completely dibilitating at times. I have been down for months now, hope there is an increse in energy soon for both of us.

For reasons I do not understand, I feel completely fine and motivated enough taking a shower at a community pool locker room, but at home it is such a struggle.

Ani, thanks for the link, I will try it. I have going to bed at 10PM down but I need help with flossing and exercise.

I feel all that everyone is saying in this forum. Sometimes the only reason that I can get myself to take a shower is because I don't want my fiance to think that I smell. As for the brushing of my teeth, I know I should and I intend to everyday, but then I get out of bed and my ambition is gone.
