My psychiatrist had me start taking Lithium with my Wellbutrin but after a scare with the stomach flu and subsequent high lithium levels and getting REALLT sick, I am looking for an alternative. Lithium also makes me feel super numb and I donÂ’t like that.
I was reading about Propanolol and as a sufferer also of migraines I am curious if anyone has taken both this and Wellbutrin? Obviously IÂ’ll talk with my psych. I just want to try to find something that will work. My anxiety is through the roof with Wellbutrin but so far itÂ’s been the only thing to address my depression. I also suffer from hand tremors (much worse with the Lithium). I see you canÂ’t take it with NSAIDS so thatÂ’s a little scary but I donÂ’t take them often except to reduce fever. Any input would be greatly appreciated. __________________ || Does the walker choose the path, or does the path choose the walker? || |

I'm sorry you were so sick, jaymoq. I can understand be wary of Lithium because of that.
I'm a little confused. Are you suggesting replacing Lithium with propranolol? Replacing Wellbutrin with propranolol? Or adding propranolol to Lithium and Wellbutrin? If the first, are you on some other mood stabilizer or an antipsychotic besides Lithium? I've heard and personally experienced propranolol being helpful for both anxiety and hand tremors, but it's not a mood stabilizer. I don't believe it's meant to control depression or hypomania/mania. It certainly wouldn't control mine. I take propranolol for tachycardia, which could be a bit related to anxiety. For some people it's also helpful for lowering blood pressure. Check with your psychiatrist or pharmacist, but it was always my understanding that you could take Lithium with acetaminophen (Tylenol), so it's not like there's no OTC pain reliever allowed. I never took ibuprofen or naproxen sodium on Lithium. I missed ibuprofen, but never really used naproxen sodium. |

I was on both Wellbutrin and propranolol and did fine. I do think the beta blocker helps a bit with anxiety for me, but I do not get too anxious on the Wellbutrin, fortunately. But I feel that is a secondary issue in what you are saying. As BirdDancer notes, the propranolol is no kind of replacement for lithium, a powerful mood stabilizer. Do you plan to add another mood stabilizer if you are going to d/c the lithium? I really hope you speak with your pdoc about all this. Going off any mood stabilizer if you are a person who needs one can be quite dangerous (I have personally suffered the consequences). I hope you talk to your pdoc. There are lots of other mood stabilizers and they all have their own side effect profiles.
