Remeron was helping me sleep but now I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping since starting Lamictal. The Remeron isn't working as well. I took 30-40 mg Doxepin for sleep for awhile and it helped me sleep (but probably didn't help my depression like Remeron). Last night I was up for three hours in the middle of the night so I'm pretty tired today. I'm wondering if I should try switching back to Doxepin or if I should ask about another tricyclic like Amitriptyline. Does anyone take a tricyclic for depression and/or sleep?

i took tofranil-pm (a different form of tofranil...I think its still on patent) and generic Tofranil. both are dosed at night, both help depression. overall...as long as you're not planning on an OD and you don't have heart problems or anything, I'd say tofranil (from my very limited, personal experience) could possibly get the job done about as well as any modern drug.

I used to take imipramine for a combination of sleep and depression. It was good for me because it came in 10 mg tablets and could easily be adjusted to accommodate depression or mania as needed. I usually floated between 50-90 mg but eventually started needing more and not tolerating it (and I think I was getting manic from the dose that was helping my depression if I remember right) so I had to go off it but it worked for me for several years which is the 2nd longest an AD has ever worked for me (the other being Emsam which has worked for 10 years).

I've been on doxepin but only at a tiny dose and it didn't do anything. They put me on it IP with my MAOI but my own pdoc didn't feel comfortable with it so we stopped it. I think I was on it once before long ago but don't remember that well.

Tricyclics can definiteliy help with depression and sleep both if you can get the dosing right.

I was on Doxipen for 3-4 years for sleep, when I took it it only came in 25,50 or 100mg.. sometimes 50 was enough other times I needed 100, the max out on it is 150 mg.

Honestly as a life long insomniac it gave me good quality sleep more often than anything else had. I liked that I was able to “fall asleep “ and I wasn’t chemically “forced to sleep “ like Ambein made me feel. If that makes sense.

I’m on steroids for my Asthma and they kill my ability to sleep so I might need to take it for a bit.

I took norpramin for some time. The pdoc placed me on a low dose for some reason, which never worked for me. Then a new pdoc upped it allot, which started to make a difference.
