Anyone taking Zoloft along with a mood stabilizer? I’m thinking of mentioning that to my doctor next week since I still haven’t found a med I like as much as Zoloft for depression. But I know I need a mood stabilizer with it to prevent the manic switching, so wondering if anyone is on a combination that works well.

My daughter has BP I she’s on Lamictal and put on Zoloft about 5-6 months ago and it’s been a wonder drug, finally fully pulled her out of a stubborn depression. She does have to watch for any Mania.. so far so good.

I am aware that I am extremely biased on this subject, but I highly recommend not taking Zoloft. It has extreme danger for mania, mixed episodes, and gave me psychosis. I don't think any amount of mood stabilizer would make that make sense.
There are mood stabilizers out there that work well for depression. Lamictal has worked for that for me. __________________ Bipolar 1, GAD Lithium 900mg, Gabapentin 700mg, Zyprexa 10mg |

Being BP1 and taking Zoloft with no stabilizer is a recipe for the hospital or much worse.

I should clarify that I'm BP2 and also have OCD. Was on zoloft for 2 years without a mood stabilizer and was never hospitalized or did anything crazy, so I think i'll be alright =). Talked to my doc today and going to try the Lamictal-Zoloft combo.

My sister takes Zoloft and Abilify together, and has for several years. I haven't seen her anything near hypomanic for all of that time. I can't speak for her experiences with depression, but she hasn't seemed depressed. She even seemed to progress through the stages of grieving, when her youngest son died, pretty quickly. She seemed to manage better than my father and me with her son's death. I found that odd/curious, frankly, but I can't know for sure why or if there isn't something deeply seated that I don't know about.

I don't take zoloft but I do take paxil along with a moodstabilizer and APs and don't have any problems. I hope the zoloft/lamictal combo is helpful to you!

hi. i think zoloft+abilify has been studied by the Abilify people...hits multiple receptors or...something.
lamictal sounds good. even though I take an 'atypical,' I always think its a good idea to avoid the antipsychotics if possible, and to keep the dose as low as possible if one finds they are, in fact, necessary. though not a mood stabilizer, gabapentin (or the new one, lyrica) can help take the edge off things, help sleep in higher doses. gabapentin is generic, not a controlled substance. i don't know much about lyrica, except its in Schedule V (benozdiazepines are in Schedule IV), so kind of controlled, but refills are allowed, I think it may be generic now. |

Pdoc added Zoloft to Lamictal a while back, and it sent me into a crazy psychotic/mixed episode. It was one of the worst episodes I've ever had. I was even on an antipsychotic with those meds at the time.
I know that it is not the case for everyone, but please be cautious. __________________ Bipolar 1 Disorder, Unspecified Anxiety Disorder |
