So I'm having nervous energy, doomed feeling all the time. Could it be the Abilify (akathisia) or should I ask for something to be added?

it could be. maybe not. really helpful, i know. :-(

akathisia can be suppressed with: gabapentin, lyrica, benzodiazepines, propranolol, even remeron (apparently...weird, to me...), and (for the 'alternative' among us) high dose b6. the high dose b6 is interesting, but I wouldn't try it without somebody supervising. anyway...

there's a risk of long term, even (try not to be afraid...) permanent akathisia. that was/is more common with people kept on high doses of the old drugs, especially the state hospital doses...those dosages caused all sorts of problems. these days...

well, the "atypical" vs "conventional" categorization is kind of...not so helpful. abilify may or may not be a little less likely to cause TD than many other options (rejoice!), but the akathisia is...real. often painful.

so, personally, just based on my own experiences...I'd ask for a GABA-drug and a switch, if you need an antipsychotic. and...id probably ask for something that -isn't- a D2 partial agonist. -all- tranquilizers cause akathisia in some people, but abilify, rexulti, and vraylar are kind of...rough, in that regard.

but that's me. propranolol didn't touch my inner misery w/ zyprexa akathisia, but klonopin+gabapentin got the job done till I was switch...to Abilify, which did not and has not caused akathisia, for me..but on average, is more likely to cause it than zyprexa. weird, huh?

are you sleeping? ;

Sleep is touch and go for me 5-7 hrs seems to be my max. I had this feeling really bad on Zyprexa before I'd pass out and I woke up fine so I didn't say anything but this has been months and it's not going away. If it was anxiety I'd think It'd come and go.

Please do not ever take more than a total of 50mg per day of Vitamin B6. Studies have shown higher doses of B6 can cause peripheral neuropathy.

Yes, any higher amount under supervision only, and then I would ask serious questions.

The more bioavailable form of Vitamin B6 is: Pyridoxal-5-phosphate.

Love to All!

Hi Miguel'smom. You should discuss your current mood and energy state with your doc. I will say that I would not have described my past akathisia as you did.

I'll share my info. I was on Abilify, then Dr. W. increased my dose (can't recall, but it was still a fairly low dose). I had an episode of akathesia, which was the freakiest sensation I could imagine. Horrible. Dr. W. added Cogentin, but I kept having odd reactions to Abilify, so she stopped it.

From what I've read, Abilify does tend to cause akathesia. Reach out to your pdoc.

I did not say it, yet had meant to do so :
Please do reach out to your pdoc.
I think I saw in another post of yours that your pdoc will not change meds without an appointment?
If so, this is just inhumane to anyone experiencing akasthisia or anything like it.
If I were you, I would call anyway and see if I could get someone's attention for help!

I hope you do not have to live with this for the next 7 days!

Please do advocate for yourself!
Please take good care!

Benadryl is a quick fix, in a pinch...more for dystonia , acute EPS, but...some people say it helps akathisia. --not-- a doctor, just saying...1 (nefarious) psych had me on 1 tablet of Benadryl for akathisia and to help with sleep. again: in that case, a switch from the offending antipsychotic was the -real- solution.

I was on just Abilify for a year. When I was first taking it, it worked well. After a few months, the anxiety and depression crept in. New pdoc recommended Lamictal and Wellbutrin. They have lifted me out of the depression. Hope it lasts.

I had that doomed feeling too. Like something bad was going to happen all the time. The world ending, my husband and dogs were going to die, even my teeth bothered me, and they are fine. House work was overwhelming. I didn't want to face anything else and wanted it to end. I could tell myself it was all in my head. I could look at other people and see that they were fine, so my fears were unfounded or at least an overreaction. my mind would not take a break. Hope the Abilify helps. Everyone is different and different things work for them. Hugs.

I got Akathisia bad on the Aripiprazole [Abilify for you]. And I was only on 5 mg. When I came off it the Akathisia lifted practically instantly.

I hope that things ease off for you too.
