Has anyone here had symptoms of Tardive Dyskenisia (involuntary movements) caused by meds? I am on Abilify 5 mg. At 10 mg, my lips would purse and my toes would constantly move. I read about this, and it can become permanent even after stopping the medication. Right now, I am symptom free, but it really concerns me. I am scheduled to see my pdoc tomorrow, and will discuss this with him. Not only does the Abilify help with depression (along with welbutrin), it has completely stopped the frequent chronic migraines I have had since I was 9. Something about the dopamine receptors. Anyway, I don't want to come off completely. I was just curious how common this is. Thanks for any feedback.

Any antipsychotic can trigger TD, unfortunately. First generation antipsychotics carry the highest risk of causing TD, but people often forget that the second generation antipsychotics -- the "safer" ones -- can cause it too.
The good news is that the existence of TD can be dose dependent, which means that sometimes reducing the dose of your TD-causing med eliminates TD altogether. That may be the case for you. You're right that TD can be come permanent, so if you decide to stay on Abilify, just keep a watchful eye out for resurgence of TD symptoms. However, I do want to point out that there is a newer "version" of Abilify that is available on the market. It's called Rexulti. I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's chemically very similar and supposedly carries a lower risk of side effects compared to Abilify. I have been on Rexulti for almost 3 years at this point, I think. Here is more info on Rexulti if you're interested: https://medicaidmentalhealth.fmhi.us...piprazole).pdf |

Abilify (Zyprexa and Geodon) gave me akathisia, but no other movement disorder. I did have what my psychiatrist ID'd as a dystonia from the 1st generation antipsychotic. Navane (thiothixene). My dystonia was in the form of involuntary lip puckering. It was pretty freaky! I called my psychiatrist quite soon after it started, so he lowered my Navane dose. That stopped it. I ended up going off Navane soon after because the lower dose did not prevent my mania from returning (even with Geodon also on board, at the time). I did not have any other involuntary movements (such as my toes).

I got TD on Invega Sustenna (234mg shot every 3 weeks) but it went away after I stopped it. For me it was chewing motions/involuntary facial movements which my psychiatrist noticed and I got off the med. I'm on abilify and thorazine now and haven't had any issues

I experienced a freaky case of akathesia on Abilify, but no TD symptoms. I have had them on other meds, though.
I'm glad you're seeing your pdoc tomorrow. Let us know how it goes. __________________ |

Yesah, you can just see from the stories here that everyone responds to these drugs in his or her own way. Just stay on top of it. I do great on Abilifry up to 20, but at 25, I get dystonia. Thorazine has been no problem. I do great on Zyprexa up to 10, but get bad akathesia at 15. So on. Everybody is different, that's what you need to know.

Thanks for all the responses! I saw my pdoc today. He seems to be ok with 5 mg Abilify with no TD symptoms, but wants to keep an eye on it. Thanks so much for the recommendation of Rexulti. I will keep it in mind if I have to come off the Abilify. I really need something for the headaches. Being headache free is almost worth the side effects. I really appreciate this forum. It has helped me feel like I am not a freak.LOL!
