I found the following interesting and somewhat in-depth article about typical (1st generation) antipsychotics. Some of it is a little heavy on science, but not too heavy. The article contains goodies of info from which tend to be most sedating, have which special functions/purposes (i.e. better for positive vs. negative schizophrenia symptoms), are least and most likely to cause EPS and/or prolactin issues, average daily doses (I've seen differing data), and more. Here's the article:

Psychopharmacology Institute

Some previously posted experiences on specific typicals include:

Thorazine - Thorazine Stories?

Trilafon (perphenazine) - Trilefon (perphenazine)

Do you have experience with any others?

Thanks for sharing that, Blue_Bird! Maybe this thread could be a place others can also share experiences. Do you experience any side effects from Thorazine, Blue_Bird? What did Thorazine seem to help you most with?

I take 400 mg of thorazine along with my other meds (vraylar, trileptal, zoloft, wellbutrin) it helps a lot with voices and paranoia/delusions. The main side effect I get from it is drowsiness, which mostly went away after awhile thankfully, because at first I was like a zombie, but it was worth it because it works really well and I don't feel that way anymore. No other side effects luckily, and it's weight neutral for me. I was switched from 600 mg of seroquel over to the thorazine with another AP, which together put a stop to all of the madness.

That does sound very positive!

I described experience with Trilafon (perphenazine) in the thread I referenced in my OP here. It was quite effective at clearing my head and curbing my mania (and psychosis). I wasn't on it more than four or six weeks. I think I would give it another chance in the future, if needed. I don't recall sedation. I remember taking 12 mg/day.

Navane (thiothixene), at 10 mg/day, was helpful, but not as helpful at controlling my moods as the Trilafon (12 mg/day), which I took right afterwards. Navane eventually gave me a dystonia (involuntary lip puckering) so I was taken off of it quickly. Navane was definitely weight neutral for me. I gained some weight on Trilafon, but the gain may not have been med-related.

I take Haldol. Just a tiny bit once a day. I have lots of bottles of extra because I apparently have a prescription for PRN pills. I suppose it works for hallucinations since I have had any in months. Or maybe its one of the other 19 psych drugs I'm on? (See signature.)

I was on Haldol for a short amount of time. I had akathisia from it but adding cogentin helped. It ended the psychosis/mixed episode I was in, but then they switched me to the injection and that didn't seem to help as much so they switched me to risperdal consta

Thanks for the thread, BirdDancer. I was on Thorazine for some weeks, hoping it would help with my worsening psychosis. But it did not really help me, for some reason. Trilafon was recently recommended (I believe also by BirdDancer--thank you!) as another option. I will look at that at my next pdoc appt. in a couple of weeks.

Having a tremendous amount of trouble with psychosis right now and welcoming anything that will help. I may have to go on Clozaril, but we shall see.
