how long does it take after meds to find your normal? I'm thinking months. It's only been 3 weeks. I see pdoc in 2 weeks for a prn.

(1.) depends if the med works or not
(2.) depends on which kind of med (3.) depends on your body's liver metabolism (4.) depends on the other meds you're taking Antipsychotics can take as little as a few hours to have effect in some people (according to people's posts I've read on here), but they can take up to 4-6 weeks. Quote:
Mood stabilizers can take weeks, too. See here: Quote:

Hi Miguel'smom. I assume you mean after starting a medication or medications? You're no referring to after stopping them, are you?
bluebicycle supplied a lot of useful information. I guess the only thing I'll add is that our brains sometimes have to heal after severe episodes. Just like any injury needs time to heal. Medication alone only does part of the work. Time, therapeutic efforts, and healthy lifestyle are important, too. And obviously if a new medication has initial side effects, our bodies have to adapt to them, so that the side effects ease. Sometimes it's difficult to feel "normal" if a new medication is making us feel especially sedated, or some other discomfort. |

I'm sorry I'm actually talking about after you stop them. I know it takes months for most meds to fully work but how long after stopping medication does it take to get out of your system and get back to unmedicated swings?

You'd have to look at the elimination half-life of each med you're taking to find out. For example, I know that my pdoc said Rexulti and Abilify take about 2-3 months to completely leave your system because their elimination half-lives are so long.
If you want to know the exact timing, you'd have to do some calculus and statistical modeling based on your personal rate of elimination (by looking at the half-life), which is why these things are so complex to answer directly, and why the range varies so much from person to person. I'm sure you could probably find some info online, though. Just look up info on "total drug elimination." You may also be interested in reading about "clearance" (psychopharmacology). |

My understanding is it can take months for your brain to rebalance. That is of course assuming it can. Sometimes we actually need the meds for this very reason.
