What dose did it start working for you? I'm only on 200mg and it's not working.

I took 200 mg twice a day and it took about a month before it started working and over a decade before it stopped working

Whoops, confused that with lamictal.
I'm on tegretol now, time release, 300mg twice a day. It took about a month to work |

I take 200 mg twice a day and it works pretty well for me. I noticed a difference in the first few days, but I’m very sensitive to medication. I know it can be prescribed at much higher doses than 200 though.

I have always taken a rather large dose. For several years, I took 1,400 mg per day. As of about two years ago, I have taken 1,200 mg per day. I can't say that Tegretol XR (yes, I take XR) does the full job at keeping me stable, but it did seemingly do the full job at ridding me of some musical hallucinations and other odd almost seizure-like symptoms. It succeeded at doing that at 1,400 mg after about a few weeks to a couple months. I had a bit of an adjustment to Tegretol XR. As my dose went up and up, I experienced some spaciness and even double vision, however, those side effects eased then completely went away after a few months. They weren't constant. More episodic. My eventual reduction to 1,200 mg was because I had a recurrence of the double vision. This was years after taking 1,400 mg. The double vision stopped immediately after my dose was lowered.
The only side effect I currently attribute to Tegretol XR is clumsiness. And I can be super clumsy! This shows itself not in my walking, but to a small degree when attempting precision dance moves, or handling items. I break a lot of glasses, and similar things, and knock stuff over all of the time. My desire to ride my bike faded a long while back. I'm sure I could, though, but the clumsiness makes me reluctant. Despite this, I do not have a tremor or anything of that sort. All in all, clumsiness is not a big deal for me. My Tegretol does seem to interact with a couple of my other medications. My Synthroid dose is pretty high, and my Seroquel XR dose has gradually gone up up up. Last edited by Soupe du jour; Jul 28, 2020 at 02:39 PM.. |

Was on 1200. Did not help and was clumsy.

I take 300 XR twice daily. It's ok. Seems to prevent some of the massive spikes and troughs but I'm still allowed to have feelings

Just an update: I'm on 1,200 a day of the XR and it's doing it's job without totally flattening me. Getting used to walking was weird, but I can walk in a straight line most of the time now. Still haven't driven since before I went into the hospital/had the dose jacked up.

I was on it but all I remember is that it’s on the never again list along with depokote. Lots of horrible side effects for me.

Spikes, that's great news! It never flattened my mood, either. I also take 1,200 mg of the XR.
Tegretol XR is likely a medication I will want to stay on long-term or even permanently. It's already been years. Hopefully I won't get some bad side effect out of the blue. So far, they've been quite mild and tolerable. |
