How much, what kind. I just increased mine to 6 gm a day and it is a 1.5 to 1 EPA to DHA ratio. I feel way better, but no clue why. Also, has it made you manic?

Thanks!!!!

I take the daily amount that’s on the bottle which is two a day. Nope doesn’t affect my mood at all.

Says on the bottle 1200mg fish oil and 360mg of omega oil. I got them at Walgreens when they had a buy one get one free sale. I get a lot of my otc stuff from there when they have the bogo sales.

Beginning to suspect the higher dose may actually be helping... Quick brain quiz:

Q: What dry wt. of the human brain do phospholipids make up?

A: 60 percent.

Maybe fatty acids really do matter...

So I am about to toss out what my intuition thinks. I haven't backed this up with anything, but I like physics, so here we go...

I think the fat acts as an insulator for the brain the same way insulators work in electrical circuits. It separates the conductors and keeps things flowing properly without major loss of heat. When we have conditions that cause an abnormal increase in activity the fat in our brains is used heavily. When we are depressed, our brains slow down and the fat is used less and less to create new neurons and pathways.

Now... If you've ever seen what happens to oil that is reused at McDonalds it isn't pretty. It gets super crudded up. So imagine that happening in your brain. Manic like activity occurring heats up the fat over and over and it becomes less oily and more like blockages. The same thing happens in your brain when you consume lots of saturated fats. It is less like oil and more like sludge.

Studies have shown taking fish oil increases neuroplasticity. My theory is it replenishes the used up fat and keeps things flowing smoothly. I think it assists during mania because it keeps the oil from crudding up during rapid fire. I think it helps during depression because it helps to keep stagnant oil from blocking up our circuits and helps aid in the production of new pathways.

When you reuse cooking oil too many times it creates free radicals that are nasty little chemicals that cause inflammation and even cancer. What is fish oil supposed to do? Fight inflammation. Anyway, keeping the oil refreshed and non-saturated is key.

I take it. The bottle days 3 pills is 1200mg EPA and 900mg DHA. I only take 2 pills a day though. It just makes sense. Go burpless. Worth the extra few bucks.

With all of that lightning, you need a good insulator.

What is burpless?

I am like Temple Grander, I think in images mostly-- the one my brain threw up in reply to your words was hilarious! Old onion ring grease and a couple crusty rings from 6 batches ago. Ha!!
I am taking 3 a day now. 1 did nothing over, oh, 6 months. Read a ton, dose way too low.

I have not taken OTC fish oil supplements for about 8 years now, and have no desire to restart them. Prior to that, I took OTC Nature's Bounty fish oil, their highest dose that was the same as Nammu mentions above (1200 mg with 360 mg Omega-3 fatty acids comprising of EPA, DHA, and other fatty acids). For some months I took 3 pills per day, as directed on the bottle. I guess then you just multiply the numbers above by 3. Then I decided to reduce it to just 2 of the pills per day. I continued that for at least another year.

Frankly, the fish oil I took above, did little to nothing for me. It didn't even seem to help my triglycerides, which fish oils supposedly should help. I was taking it mostly during a period of mild to severe depression. It definitely didn't elevate my mood in any way.

I won't say what others should or shouldn't do, but as for me, the only time I'd ever try fish oil again is if it is prescription grade. Then, I'd give that a chance.I have read that prescription versions are a bit different and have more of an efficacy (for cardiovascular issues) than the OTC. I think I only know of one person who took prescription fish oil for bipolar disorder and I believe it was the brand Lovaza. I forget that person's full opinion on it.

For the time being, I'm just going to eat more salmon and tuna. Fish tastes good! I ate some tuna yesterday.

So some of it can make you burp up nasty fish oil tasting ickyness. Burpless is a much smoother ride.

I am currently on this brand. 3 pills was too much imo so I take two.

I know, right? Have you ever seen Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead? I pictured the happy fat baths they make her scrub at the chili dog place. So gross!

And what is that board behind your pic? It looks like something I write when my brain is overfiring...

Gotta check out the movie, sounds funny.

Yeah, looks like pretty manic, huh. For my book about my journey uncovering what happened to my brain from mom's pregnancy on. She was a big drinker, God rest her wondrous soul. It is all coming together, that stuff is the neurochem behind my kooky-a#$ brain. Super fun for total dweeb like me.

It is a classic.

Yeah, I instantly read it without reading it. I know those thoughts and feels. My brain works the same way. This last time I was stuck in geometry meets music land. Super fun. Math. Physics. Geometry. Chemistry. Art. Music. History. Its all the same language in my brain. I have a 5ft whiteboard in my homeschool room. It was covered and I filled up many pages of notebooks. I think hypergraphia sets in at some point, but we need a channel to get it out.

My therapist and my husband have now independently told me I am like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. Some pretty insightful stuff comes out of it but its a bat shiz nuts ride. Someone reading my notes before I transfer them to a book or blog or something would never be able to translate.

Yeah, I get it completely. But its dangerous. Other than fish oil, what are you doing to slow it down?

I take fish oil. And of course salmon (3 times a week? That's not often for a bear)

I kinda wish I did. Take fish oil, I mean. I cannot get past the idea of...fish...oil. That some fish died so I could swallow it's body oil. *pukola*

I take biotin, which makes my hair and nails thrive, despite the myriad of fun things I do to it/them. I've taken multi-vits...taken B's...honestly, never noticed anything positive or negative. Wish I could say I did.

Maybe I'm spoiled by psych meds in that they're action is so noticeable, so obvious. I love the line in Drugstore Cowboy...something about...Most people don't know how they're gonna feel from one moment to the next. But a pill-popper has a pretty good idea. All you gotta do is look at the labels on the little bottles.

I bought the chewable. Very, very bad, fishy taste. I mix a cup of low fat cottage cheese and a packet of flavored salmon and have it for lunch every day. Over a year, my triglyceride level dropped to under 100, and LDL down also. The cottage cheese raised my bone density to normal. I did this after taking Seroquel for 15 years which tripled my lipid panel, and helped me to gain 60#. Just saying that I would rather eat my Omega 3. No judgement.😁
