Yesterday, when I went to see my new therapist, I was discussing the fact that I heard my husband talking to me, even though he wasn't. She acted pretty concerned. Then I told her about hearing my mother call out to me occasionally. I know she's not really there, because she is not alive, but occasionally this does occur. She was asking lots of questions about these events.
When I got home, I asked my husband if he had ever heard someone talking to him who wasn't really there. He looked at me like I was nuts.
Is all of this what people mean when they say they here voices? I just assumed this happened to lots of people.
I figure if it is not upsetting to me, it is fine.
I guess I am amazed that everything that I consider normal really isn't.

Interesting I thought it was normal to. I have the same thing I even often ask them to repeat themselves and they look at me like I'm nuts so in understand what you mean. My therapist also seemed horibly concerned and when I was in the hospital made me take more anti psychotics.

It happens to me too. I'm on more Zyprexa so it hasn't happened lately though.

I've heard voices before, but only once has it been the voice of someone I knew...that's an interesting situation. I understand that if it's not bothering you then you don't want to take more meds for it, but what if this gets worse and you lose the ability to tell that the voices aren't real? Or what if they begin to take up every waking moment? I have a friend with schizophrenia who hears voices constantly; they keep a running commentary on everything that she does. If that starts to happen to you, it could be quite debilitating.

Take care

This is kind of alarming! My sister is schizophrenic, but I have never thought of her diagnosis sharing the same behaviors as mine, other than the severe depression.
I have heard voices since I was a child, so I have never considered it strange, I know that these are not real. Inside my mind there are constant conversations going on, but the voices I hear aren't the same.

blue mountains, ok i hear voices too and i see people who arent there and i see people move and do things like move toward me and kiss me when in fact they are just standing there talking to me. its like a ghost of themselves. I understnad fully that its not real and i dont let it bother me. im on antipsychotics and dont want to be on more so i dont tell my P Doc. i believe that my sister has schizophrenia and she believes that things are happening when they are not. the difference is there. i know its not real. she thinks the events are real and she makes crazy descisions based on her beliefs. does this help?

I agree as long as you know it's not real you should be ok. Although for me sometimes I can't tell what's real I guess that's why my therapist was so concerned.

I sometimes think I hear someone call my name, but look and it wasn't anything. I think something like that is normal. I think our minds assign similar voices to it. It's like if you sit in the dark and stare straight ahead you start to see things, but it's just your mind trying to make sense of shapes in the dark.

When I hear a voice, it's very different. Mine are not very often. Like the one that snuck up behind me and whispere "HEY!" really loud in my ear. It was like someone was right there next to me. I screamed, turned around, no one there. Or, sometimes, I hear a man's voice screaming! It like shakes the hole house. It's like the t.v. turned up to max level. But, no one else hears it but me.... >.>

Weird??? No way!
Your T is overreacting because they do not cause you any distress. Just because our brains are wired differently and manage to have their very own circus acts does not mean straight jackets are in this season

The stuff I hear and see generally do not bug me, unless I'm already distressed and I woudn't let a dr convince me they should.

I agree that if I'm not worried about it, then it's okay. As I mentioned earlier, my sister is schizophrenic, and like Tilly mae's, she really does believe that people are out to get her, etc. when she isn't medicated correctly. I guess by now if I had any of her symptoms these would have presented themselves.

I've had the same thing happen to me. Mild auditory hallucinations I was told. A sure sign that somethings is off balance upstairs. For me it was the precurser to extreme mania and full blown psychosis.

Hmmm... interesting....

I still think it's more normal than you think, and I bet some doctors just put more into worrying about it than others.

I agree with dark heart. It happens to me occasionally and I don't worry about it. I have BPII and have never had any visual hallucinations.

If it's not bothering you, then personally I don't see the point in worrying about it or taking anti-psychotics, as they're not something you want to take unless you have to. Tell T and Pdoc so they're up-to-date, but I don't think it'll change anything unless it gets worse.

All the best,

*Willow*

Tilly may should I worry that I get paranoid to the point of thinking people are after me? I know you say your sister does that and is schizophrenic. My doctor has me on anti psychotics because of it. I wonder if he's not telling me something.

Is it coming from inside your head or outside your head?

My therapist told me that if it's outside, then it's more than likely trauma related and will lessen once removed from the situation that's causing the trauma ... ie. war zones, abusive relationships, etc. ... This would be a PTSD type response to the trauma ... However, if the voices are coming from inside your head then that's more related to schizophrenia type mental disorders.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely,
Pfrog
