Hi guys,
I'm having a really hard time here. Found this site looking up info on bipolar because I was just diagnosed with bipolar 2 and started lithium this week. I'd had 5 serious depressions, hospitalized twice, and felt like I was doing a great job staying educated and working hard with maintenance treatment for depression, only to have this abrupt change. Did this happen to anyone? I would consider getting a second opinion, except that all the signs and symptoms of hypomania were there (and in hindsight I'd had this on a smaller scale a couple times before). I had hardly slept for 13-15 days, and now I'm literally typing this in bed, called in sick for work--feel like a freight train hit me. I have the exhaustion that goes along with the flu, when just yesterday after 2hrs sleep I had SO much energy--ran 8 miles, did all my work like a pro, etc etc. I feel like someone took my batteries out. Were you diagnosed with bipolar early on, or did you think you had some other biological problem like me for a long time?
Thanks for all your posts. I'm going to fall asleep again.

Yes! Heck I knew something was wrong at 16 but the Pdoc just said I was a normal teenager and blew me off!

My first ever Dx was "depression". Then 2 years later, the diagnosis changed to MDD. A few months after that, the diagnosis changed to BP 1 when I had a manic episode.

I guess I'm really fortunate/lucky that I got the correct diagnosis so quickly. I know a lot of people suffer for many years before getting the correct Dx.

Doc wants to eventually have me on Lamictal but it takes a while to build up and work, so I'm starting with Lithium--took 1st one last night. Just worried x100.

That's a whole lot of diagnoses. I imagine your meds changed with those too? Sheesh. I guess I wouldn't be bothered by a new dx except that the med changes right now seem so abrupt and major. An SSRI over to Lithium isn't like switching Tylenol for Advil!

Past diagnosis: Depression, anxiety, agitated depression, A PTSD, ADHD-PI, psychosis

Current diagnosis : ADHD, PTSD, borderline personality and Bipolar (not sure if I'm 1 or two), but my dr says antidepressants make me mixed.

I was diagnosed Bipolar when I was 24 but blew it off and told my dr to take it off my chart. At age 27, I was given Bipolar diagnosis again so I'm ready to finally accept that I have it.

I've been on antidepressants for years which probably explained my inconsistencies... depressed can't get out of bed, and hypomania (productivity!!! Energy! Euphoria!)

I knew there was something different about me when i was very little but didnt understand these things at that time. Started showing full on signs of being suicidal, very angry & overly emotional, very anxious & suffering from severe insomnia) dx at 15/16, i had bottled up a hell of a lot as a child & just suddenly exploded one day. Things were very up & down for a while & i tried to brush it off i guess, thinking things would get better or the feelings would eventually go away, i was so wrong! My very early 20's i'd had enough of everything, it all felt like it was too much, i finally went to the dr & got referred to a psychologist, only to be told straight up that i need to be medicated because something was very wrong, i knew this of course but could never figure it out. Firstly i got dx with "mild depression" & i knew it was way more than that! So i was very persistant on finding the answers so i could understand & finally start to deal with this. Next was "Severe depression" then MDD & Anxiety, i asked to do any tests, scans, really anything i could to get to the bottom of all this. I knew it was more than that, i then was dx with psychosis (medically induced, not drug induced) I went in hospital for 2 months on suicide watch, still managed to try & go through with it during my stay! I finally said to my first psych "maybe i have bipolar" she literally laughed in my face & said "theres no way you have bipolar!" Got rid of her quick! 5-6 psychiartrists later & i found a good one! Told him everything & yep i was right! Dx with Bipolar II, Psychosis, GAD & now PTSD this year! It took atleast 5 years to finally get the answer i knew all along! It was hard to understand at first but i accepted it & things have changed so much! I finally feel at ease knowing i dont have to keep searching now!

Yes
I was diagnosed with MDD and PTSD
Given antidepressants that threw me into bad mixed states and caused lot of depersonalization so in addition was labeled as having DID.

During times I quit meds life was marginally better. Finally after years of hospitals and therapy they figured out I was bipolar and shouldn't be on antidepressants.

I was then able to address the PTSD in therapy which lead to the therapist being able to help me figure out when I started sliding into depression or mania so I can be more proactive and get help before it goes too far.

I went to the psychiatrist at school and he told me I was fine, no dx even though I wasn't sleeping much and everything seemed vivid and I was seeing shimmers. He said it was just probably due to the stress of working three jobs and commuting to school.

When I had full fledged mania and a psychotic break, some years later, I convinced the doctors it was just female stuff about trying to get pregnant. Finally my family had me committed (5150) to the hospital where I was diagnosed with bipolar I. I think it's correct because I have had the symptoms since I was a teen.

Depression and anxiety at age 15 (1990) Social anxiety was added around age 19. Bipolar around age 36. PTSD was mentioned but not explored around age 39. I'm now 41 and worried about what might be added to the list.

I was misdiagnosed with MDD for over twenty years. I didn't get diagnosed with BP1 until 2013. This is in addition to the anxiety disorders, PTSD, and BPD.

I was diagnosed with MDD in 1984. It wasn't until 2001 I was diagnosed BP1 and finally BP2 in 2014. All from different doctors.
