I was diagnosed with Bipolar II today by a psychiatrist, but I don't have hypomania that lasts four days. Does anyone have a diagnosis of Bipolar without the mania? I do get "hyper" or "bubbly" but only for a few hours at a time, never four days in a row...

If you received a careful diagnosis, I would suggest not being too concerned about the length of any given episode. As I understand it, people with bipolar disorder, and pretty much every other type of mental illness, run a complete spectrum of severity. To me, the important thing is that you have sought treatment and now have the opportunity to address it in a meaningful way. I wish you all the best and welcome to the forum

Hi michael, its a hard thing to come to terms with I found anyway and am still working on the ups and downs without meds I too am type 2 and have around a week at a time although coming out of this cycle that has lasted over, btw I wouldnt recommend to anyone not to take meds its really hard work and maybe down the track I will, anyway Im not answering your question and agree with previous post that everyone seems to vary in what degree, and depending a lot on your past and present and situation your in at present may affect how you react to situations.this is a fantastic site, good luck with your life,I only pop in here and there for periods of time so may see you some other time.

I agree on the fact that everyone seems to be on a different 'cycle'. I have also found that there are so many things that triggger an episode some days I don't know if I am coming or going or have already been there!!! Hope this site helps you as much as it has helped me so far. There are a lot of caring people here. Jen

Hey! I'm bp2 as well and it actually took a few years to come up with that diagnosis. We are all different and what may seem "typically" manic for a disorder may not show on each of us in the same way. If you have a good doc who really looked into your issues you probably do have it. My doc didn't tell me anything about "four days" and my mania doesn't follow a lot of the traditional behaviors, but since this diagnosis I've been getting so much better. The right diagnosis and the right meds make a big difference. Keep your chin up and you'll get there!

My doc thinks that I may be in the "bipolar spectrum," though I do not even have text-book hypomania. I do have severe swings from contentment and extremely sweet spiritual growth ( which may last up to 3 years) followed by depression that is unbearably severe and frought with suicidality. I often "climb out of it" over a week or so, but depressive symptoms just hang on. I am beginning Lamictal, which will hopefully moderate some of the depression, as well as Effexor, Risperdal, and Ativan. I have been on Lithium and Depakote before, but stopped them for various reasons. I am just hoping for a little bit of stability, and relief from the agonizing pain and guilt.

Hi Michael,
I also have BP II and do not have the four day hypo. I cycle very rapidly and the hypomanias are of the dysphoric type where energetic irritablility and fast confused negative thoughts are the norm. That often mixes with depression and is called a mixed state by my pdoc. There is alot of anxiety in this also- agitated, and jittery. |

Lamictal has been my savior. I mean, I've been on different combos of stuff but the one thing my doc keeps constant is the Lamictal. She has nothing but good to say about it.

I take 100 mg of Lamictal daily and 30 mg of abilify daily and 80 mg of prozac daily....
So far this combo seems to work for me.....but there is no sure cure to the ups and downs....the meds just seem to keep the ups and downs from getting to extreme. __________________ Married, mother of 3 boys, Hoping to find blue skies amist all the black |
