My new therapist mentioned the possibility of type 2 bipolar today.

It could be that you have slight hypomania or mixed states. That happens a lot. Where you get angry or easily irritable for no reason. Or you may sometimes be more productive than others.

As others have said, sometimes bipolar meds are prescribed off label for other reasons. I have been given mood stabilizers as sleep meds. I also do not have bipolar. I agree with you about asking the doctor to do a complete new workup and not see former diagnoses. But you can give him complete information on your history verbally. He should respect that you want an honest, unbiased opinion, therefore do not want to share those records but will be willing to verbally share the history with him. Based on today it might seem like mania.
I was euphoric the entire day. I spent over $100 at the mall and I felt just really good and now I don’t want to go to sleep and I’ve been sending multiple messages to the same people even though they are not answering me back yet. I have SAD though. And for the past 13 years I’ve gotten like this the first few days of spring. So I’m guessing it’s this. |

I tend to get spring fever. I’m on top of the world.

According to psycheducation.org, the answer is yes. Also general anxiety disorder (GAD) can also use mood stabilizers. |

You can be on "bipolar meds" without being bipolar. Meds are prescribed for several different reasons

Actually, I read an article recently about having only mania- no depression.

Do you have a link to it? My therapist and I have been discussing unipolar mania. So far, I've never experienced depression but I was initially diagnosed as bipolar because of the mania. I don't think unipolar mania is an official thing yet, but I'd like to learn more.

I just learned that today when I was researching unipolar mania. Seems counter intuitive as bipolar implies two states or poles. There isn't a lot of information available about what to expect from unipolar mania, but I'm digging through what I can find in case it fits.
My doctor said she's leaning toward 'brief reactive psychosis' for me. She said she'll change her mind if I ever have another episode to give her something more to go on. It basically means something caused me to go nutty once, but nobody can tell me what or why. |

But I think your question is more along the lines of "I never have manic episodes anymore." I would say that's not that abnormal. The vast majority of bipolar folks spend most their time in either depression or normal moods. Mania is rare for most of us. So really the key is to know whether you've had at least one true manic episode. Do you think you have at any time? (I am way behind in this thread, so I apologize if this has been answered). |

My sleep specialist told me a lot of young women are being diagnosed with bipolar when they actually have narcolepsy. I’m being evaluated for narcolepsy and a few other sleep related issues. Makes sense that I would have a completely different diagnosis considering I don’t meet a lot of the criteria for bipolar anymore.
