After I told him I've been drinking every day and I do weed occasionally.
I was properly diagnosed bipolar type two with generalized anxiety disorder about 5 years ago and then I was committed for a week and discharged as borderline personality disorder. I opened up to this shrink about how I'm struggling and he failed to make a new appointment or any help. This is the second psychiatrist to kick me to the curb. I told him that the Periperodone was giving me nightmares and was told to double the dose... NOW. If there's nothing wrong with me other than struggling with drugs & alcohol, why the fiddle stick's was he giving my antisycotics?.. When I was sober for two years I still had massive mental issues. He conducted a "quick" diagnosis when I was at my best, I was very focused and not foggy and confused like 90% of the time. When he then incompetently told my mum that nothing can be done because I'm an addict. Advice? Suggestions? |

I’m sorry you aren’t getting the support you seek. I’m not sure what to suggest other than getting another opinion. Hopefully someone else on PC will be able to offer some good advice.

Where do you live? How old are you? Have you given the pdoc permission to speak with the pdoc?

I kind of agree with Christina on this one that it, at least, would be very hard to get a final diagnosis while drinking a lot and/or on drugs because those mess with one's mood so much already; it just muddies the waters a lot. I can see a provisional diagnosis of BP NOS, but not a final diagnosis.
Now, on the other hand, when they discharged you, they did so with a diagnosis of BPD. If I were you, I would actually take this diagnosis (however provisional) more seriously, because it was given after having had time to observe you and get to know you a bit in the hospital, rather than an evaluation of self-reported symptoms to a pdoc. You might think of doing DBT. And I agree with others that it's best to ditch the current pdoc and get a referral (from your PCP?) for another one. To be clear, just because you're drinking/doing drugs does NOT mean that you are not suffering from a psychiatric disorder of some kind; only that it's hard to diagnose at this time. Best of luck, you're in a very difficult situation! __________________ Bipolar 1 Lamictal: 400 mg Latuda: 60mg Klonopin: 1 mg Propranolol: 10 mg Zoloft: 100 mg Temazepam: 15 mg Zyprexa 5-10mg prn (for Central Pain Syndrome: methadone 20 mg; for chronic back pain: meloxicam 15 mg; for migraines: prochlorperazine prn) |

You can keep Doctor shopping till you find one that gives you the dig you want then take lots of drugs with significant side effects or you can stop doing drugs and look for DBT and learn coping skills to deal with the BPD

I would definitely look for a new pdoc. A huge portion of addicts also suffer from mental illness. So to say you are an addict so there is nothing else wrong is ridiculous.
I also would suggest looking into help with the addiction and trying dbt for the possible borderline as that is what you got as a diagnosis IP. While on substances they cant diagnose properly which also leads to the point that they cant say nothing is wrong either. I was already diagnosed with bipolar and personality disorder with borderline traits. Then I was diagnosed again by a diff pdoc with bipolar while IP for a month in dec/jan and off substances but the bipolar is a major part of why I binge drink(to the point of blackouts/drunk tank) for weeks at a time so often. They also considered borderline but during my time there moved from that idea to bipolar, IP is a much better place to get a diagnosis because they get to see the reality not just hear what you think. They still want me to get help for the alcohol abuse as well and put me on naltrexone to help with cravings but they didnt rule everything else out just because I drink a lot. __________________ Bipolar 1 Borderline Personality Disorder Alcohol Use Disorder Meds: Depakote Welbutrin Abilify I didn't want any flowers, I only wanted to lie with my hands turned up and be utterly empty. That's not good if your psychiatrist ignored your concerns about your drinking and occasional pot use. How much do you drink each day? Women shouldn't drink more than one drink per day. Men shouldn't drink more than two drinks per day. Anyone who takes certain medications, generally including psych meds, or has psych or certain physical issues should drink even less, or not at all. Alcohol is not a good way to medicate psych issues.
If your diagnosis is in question and conflicts with previous diagnoses, another psychiatrist opinion would be highly beneficial. The goal is to find the most appropriate treatment(s). |
