Default I KNOW I should be grateful but...

Listen.. I know I should feel better about this but I don't. Barring the background check I got in at Wal-Mart. But I got there for 11:00 today and they didn't know I was coming???
On top of that they filled the SECOND position I was offered...
So now I was given only a part time position at minimum wage...

Honestly it sounds like **** to me. I'm so disappointed.
And it involves severe time constraints, climbing ladders and other things I didn't expect. I'm really not comfortable but can't say no to an income at this point.

My boyfriend doesn't even give me room to digest this information or process. He's just like be positive be grateful at least you can help me pay bills...

They started him off like 1.25 above what I'm making.. Wtf..
I'm so conflicted about all of this. I can't even sit with myself and my emotions. And of course he's drunk already so can't talk to him..
Maybe reach out to my CSW.
Ugh

They told you to come at 11 am and then didn't expect you when you arrived on time? That's lousy of them! I also think they should have let you know what you were offered before giving away the other position. I'm sorry you have to deal with the Wal-Mart supervisor's lack of professionalism.

If your new job is just part-time and you applied for a full-time job, too, then I can't imagine they should be upset if you eventually apply for and get a different job elsewhere for better money/situation. I wouldn't tell them unless/until you got another job, or if you eventually get another job you could use that potential opportunity as a way of asking for a raise. I wonder why your boyfriend started at $1.25 more than you? Is he doing exactly the same work you're supposed to be doing? And same hours/time of day? That would seem to me to be a clear sign of how employers pay men more for the same work women do. That's not just.

I have read that Walmart is supposed to increase their starting pays in the near future. [I knew this before.] I think they're doing that for the same reason Amazon increased their minimum wages - pressure from politicians, like Bernie Sanders, for big corps to pay closer to a living wage. See Walmart to boost starting wage, give employees bonus after tax bill and Why Walmart Raised Its Wages - The Atlantic Note that the one article references the potential timing for these increases to start after the new tax laws go into effect, but don't get fooled into thinking the new tax laws inspired their announcement. Trickle down economics rarely works. The original pressure was for big corps like them to pay more of a living wage. Most say that should be $15 per hour, but Walmart's not there yet. Not all democrats are planning to push for $15, but many are. I don't know of any Republicans pushing to increase minimum wages, but I could be wrong, but most prominent Republicans are against raising them. Amazon eventually agreed to that raise to $15 and a few states have already put plans in place to do so (Minimum Wage Increases in 20 States in 2019 | Best States | US News ). I guess Walmart's planned increase is better than no increase, but hopefully things will get even better in the future. Well Maine state minimum wage is $11 an hour so i guess they can get away with paying bare minimum here. When I was at the actual interview the lady mentioned $11.50 multiple times.. in my head I was still miffed cause of my boyfriend starting pay and now I'm starting at literally bare bones. I haven't worked a minimum wage job since I was a teenager and it was under $7!!! Even when I was a telemarketer they paid well above minimum.
I've heard bad things about Wal-Mart ugh I just want to work and live above poverty level.

Hi Calypso,

Can you accept this position for now since you need the income but keep actively looking for an alternate position? Or if you can't find what you are looking for can you work two part time jobs for now?

Even if you found something that is more what you were looking for and quit in two months Walmart wouldn't even shrug. They are used to high turnover - retail always is and unfortunately they do not do a lot to retain employees.

Yes, I am taking it. I can't say no. I need it. Small town really not tons of options. I'm a certified Cna and no bites on that either. Would be much happier doing that!! Beggars can't be choosers..
Maybe once I'm earning I'll try the assisted living home. Again it won't use my Cna, but it's a 5 minute walk and I could probably finagle 2 part time jobs. Maybe. I haven't worked in a few years and don't want to kill myself here but I really really need money right now. Not only to pay bills but I'm in desperate need of a new bed, couch, and once I'm working the food stamps and insurance goes away. So groceries and medication costs. The pile grows deeper!!!
Can't win for losing...

I'm trying to settle into the feelings of it. Everyone IRL are telling me to be thankful, and I'll adjust, it will be fine, etc. Most of these people don't have to settle for a part time minimum wage job.
I guess my feelings are complicated further cause I'm qualified to do better than this. Maybe I should make some probing calls to some walkable locations. I'm not trying to come off as better or anything I'm just angry my education and certification aren't being used. I wish I was more assertive and confident about getting myself in some where. And I wish there were more job options locally. Maybe I should look at certificate classes, or single class at a time education that I can afford to start moving myself up. I just don't know. I just know that I'm not satisfied with this outcome.

It's way easier to find a job once you have one.
Unemployed people are hard to employ.

I know in an ideal world, this will be your job forever.
They will promote you, and promote you until you're
a store manager. Or maybe corporate.
Probably won't happen in the real world.-

BTW, Wally is not a bad employer once you're in,
and get full benefits.

Look at this part time job as a stepping stone.
Take it. And keep looking.

Cheers.

Calypso, I SO hear you. I got a new (probably a month now) job retail (a big corp) and can't stand it. So I'm doing what has been advised by some here, which is looking for a new job. Not telling them of course. I can appreciate your small town situation, as I've lived in many.

Wishing you the best of luck.
