Default First appointment

I have my first appointment with my new mental health facility. Iím a bit nervous because Iím not sure what to expect; itís been a few years since Iíve met a new provider. Can anyone give me an idea of what the first appointments are like?

Hi kstella95,
When is the appointment? Did it happen today?
I just wanted to say *me too* as I have a new therapist appointment next week, then a new psych appointment the following week...so I am nervous right along with you!
Generally, you'll be filling out paper work and answering questions about your history, past treatment and current symptoms.
Let us know how it goes...

Got it. Totally normal and understandable to be nervous about a first appointment. Mine is on Tuesday too. I'll be thinking about you and sending you easeful vibes that it goes better than expected.
One thing I like to remind myself is that I am there for help. And they are there to help me. And that chances are, they've likely "heard it all." So I try my best to not exaggerate, but also not downplay or minimize whatever the struggle is.
It is particularly challenging sometimes with bipolar...because we can't predict which kind of mood we'll be in on appointment day.
Be honest, be open and be willing to be nervous about it.
The good news is first appointments only happen once.
Good luck!!!

IMO - just show up and let er rip! A good P-doc will ask lots of questions and invite you back for a second session. Don't expect much direction or a plan just yet. That will come later - you might get sent on a trial and error mission so they get to know you better.

My experiences were all similar. There were questions about my history, family history and the events that led me to seek treatment. They also wanted to know about current meds and my history with meds.

I agree with FearLess. They are there to help you and there's nothing wrong you can say. They have heard it all and just need an accurate picture to work from.

Keep in mind you can interview your provider as well. Write down all of your questions and don't be afraid to ask for clarification on anything that you need more information on.

Good luck to you and I applaud you for taking steps to get help for your health. I understand the nerves, but it can be a huge relief to start on a new treatment plan. Try to spend time looking at it as the start of feeling more supported.

Good luck with your first appointment. In my experience theyíve all been similar. Asking questions to get an idea about your history and then giving a script and booking another appointment.
