Has anyone tried it?
I've tried to do some research about this subject, many sources in English say it may have mood stabilizing effects, but when I visited a Keto diet forum in my own language, some individuals with bipolar wrote that the diet triggered manic symptoms. I just want to know if anyone has tried it, if it's worth trying and if it really has those mood stabilizing effects. I'm not trying to find some miracle diet and go off all my medications, no. There were many people like that too, but I've suffered so much before I was on my meds, that I don't believe some diet could completely keep me symptomless on its own. So please share your experiences with keto diet if you have tried it. __________________ DX: Bipolar I |

I haven't tried it. I can see though that it might be helpful. I did a lot of research when I was first diagnosed. I found a lot of experts recommended limiting sugar because it can exacerbate mood swings. I also read that omega 3 fatty acids are recommended to assist with the depression side of bipolar disorder. The keto diet is both low in carbohydrates and high in Omega 3s. Makes sense.
I can also see the triggering mania aspect. Our brains are so sensitive chemically. I think the keto diet is a radical shift in how some people eat and making such a big change in the chemicals you introduce into the body can act as a trigger. I eat fairly healthy already, but it might make sense to slowly adopt a diet like this and add/remove foods gradually the same way we do with meds. |
