i mean, the ones for mental illness...i think one term is/was psychosurgery. do they still...happen?

i kinda wonder about it, because there was a time when they were relatively common or at least...accepted, even after the 1st round of psych drugs were introduced. and i do sometimes wonder if those sorts of surgeries are still performed, or if they'll make a comeback, somehow.

not that its what id consider a good idea, personally. it just seems that with so many people on psych treatments and shock making a come back...

psychosurgery would be the logical next sort of treatment to go mainstream, again.

The Mayo Clinic says this: Deep brain stimulation involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of your brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses. Or the electrical impulses can affect certain cells and chemicals within the brain.

That's the lead-off paragraph from this page: Deep brain stimulation - Mayo Clinic There's a lot of information included.

thanks for the responses. im thinking maybe they won't make a comeback. i did some google-ing, and it seems that in places where they still do operations for mental problems, even the best surgeons have some complications one does not see with pills, usually (death, seizures, infection, etc.), so...

it seems semi-popular in parts of China, but I kinda doubt it'll hit it big in the US. it looks like the NHS in Britain pays for a handful every year (not lobotomies). so...there you go. curiosity officially satisfied.
