I've posted in the dissociative disorders forum but have had no replies and I'm really concerned.

I had a migraine yesterday and took maxalt, a triptan that acts on serotonin, as prescribed. It resolved and I was sleepy for the rest of the day as often happens to me after a migraine.

This morning I woke up after sleeping for 12 hours. I didn't notice anything strange immediately but after a while whilst drinking my coffee at the table, I started feeling floaty, sort of lightheaded and weak. I checked my blood pressure and it was normal. I felt spaced out, like I was in a dream, like I would wake up any minute. I still feel this way hours later, it seems to go away a little and then return. My body feels numb, and I don't feel like I have full control of it. I feel like I'll never be normal again.
Is this depersonalization?

I take Zoloft so I'm not sure if it could be an interaction between it and the maxalt. I have had partial seizures in the past and it feels similar to an aura but they usually only last a minute or 2. This has been almost 12 hours now.

Hi Wanderlust. I'm sorry you're not feeling well and that you've been having migraines. I completely understand how that is, since I've shared such experiences.

I certainly can't definitively know if you are experiencing depersonalization or derealization, or what's going on, but it will eventually resolve itself. Have you tried using some grounding techniques?

In the past, I have written about my experiences with depersonalization/derealization, migraines (incl. silent types), and even likely Simple Partial seizures. It confused me a lot which was happening when. I even wonder how much anxiety issues played a part in some of it. I'll say that for some years I have not been affected by any of these, or at least minimally so.

As I wrote above, I have written a number of blog posts about my experiences with mental/neurological issues. One post that ties it all together is at Psychiatric Avalanche Effect – Unraveling the mystery of my past brain quirks – Bird Flight

Thank you BirdDancer.
It's reassuring to hear that you have also had similar health issues and are now doing well. I'm not familiar with grounding techniques. I tried pinching my skin to see if I was dreaming over and over, I feel the pinch but my skin feels less sensitive. I almost feel like I'm about to pass out or float away in moments. I wonder how much anxiety is playing a role. Or if I'm actually having multiple partial seizures.

You can find lots of great grounding techniques online. Many of them center around mindfulness and using your senses. An easy one to try involves simply taking your shoes off and standing barefoot on the ground outside. Let your feet feel the earth and pay attention to your breath while you do it. Cool showers are also helpful.

I had a terrible headache where my spine and neck meet for days before my last episode. I then had a very dissociative dream like experience that turned into full on psychosis with out of body experiences. It went from a dream to a nightmare quickly. Do not hesitate to reach out for professional help if you feel this evolving. Keep us posted, and I hope you get back to feeling normal soon.

You are lucky to have maxalt. I used to use it and it got rid of the migraines completely. My insurance won't pay for it because it works! Sumatriptan is all I can get and it reluctantly works- maybe.

Thankfully I can say the feeling began to subside by that night and I woke up feeling normal the next day.
My GP believes it was a migraine postdrome, not an issue with the medications or seizure activity, I am going to see my neurologist to inform him too just incase.
Thanks for your words of reassurance as at the time I felt like the feeling was going to last forever.

Moose72, I live in Australia and we are very lucky to have subsidised prescription medications. I'm sorry to hear you can't access Maxalt if it's what you need to relieve your migraines, that just seems so unfair.
