I don't think I made a good post earlier but, here we go...

I ham treated for PTSD (related to husband's death 20 years ago), anxiety and depression.

I have had increasing episodes of evil, contemptible rage. Not just anger.

R-A-G-E.

And, I typically now rage at my current husband who is insensitively supportive (if that makes sense). You know, therapy is for the weak, meds are for the weak...so, when I've had enough of the non-support...I blow it and blow it big.

Any advice?

Maybe, maybe not.

You can have intense rage from depression, anxiety, and/or PTSD. I get intense rage during depression.

My advice is to find coping mechanisms like relaxing music to calm you down. Or if you’re interested in DBT, that could help you with controlling your anger.

I had bouts of rage before my first manic episode. However, as my bipolar has progressed I have also learned how to better manage my emotions and this happens much less, if ever now. I hope never again. I don't have the energy for rage.

I used to have rage when first diagnosed. I just got so angry and frustrated and stuffed full of negative energy I just would blow up. Somewhere in there were psych ER visits.

When I go full on Manic I’m very rage-y it’s just how my Bipolar works. I have learned how to contain it , I internalize it , I personally will never go off on anyone. I use to self harm but that’s a very unhealthy coping tool so I had to learn other ways.

When I’m really bad I take a angry walk I call it , I literally stomp and cuss for a mile or 2 , my only neighbors are cows they don’t care.

I keep a stash of old ugly thrift store dishes the uglier that better and when need be I grab a few and smash them outside , usually I put them in a garbage bag and slam them on the ground a few dozen times. in the bag no mess

I take showers , some days I might take 4 or more.. because the water really helps relax me.

I make food ... I always want some type of real comfort food. Meatloaf mashed potatoes, real mac and cheese, pasta etc. focusing on preparing the food helps keep the rage in check.

I have Xanax I usually just take one at bedtime. But when rage-y I’ll take 3-4 a day

My advice is keep throwing coping skills at the rage and see what sticks.

It would be a good idea to talk to your Pdoc to see if a Med change or a add on Med short term can help smash the rage out.

Whatever you do just stay safe

the answer for me is yes , and the only reason I take an ap ... I have been afraid my whole life of killng others ... that rage , that level of anger ... I think that is one reason why depression is so real and dangerous for me ... that rage turned inward is not pretty ...

For me both PTSD and mania can cause extreme rage, especially when they come together. It can be difficult to find the source in such cases but if your rage is disproportionate to the circumstances then something else must be going on.

It’s a no from me. I’ve never been full of rage. The closest I’ve come has been anger at my diagnosis - which is a normal stage of grieving.

Yeah I’ve had rage during mania or hypomania. But also having a spouse that insults your need for help would be infuriating too.

Yes, an AP helps. I no longer fear I'll hurt someone.

I've found rage to be a bipolar symptom for me. I also get irrational irritability. But when I fly into a rage it's like any other bipolar reaction for me, it's like whatever emotion I'm having turned up off the scale. If that makes sense?

Some people with bipolar disorder are more prone to rage than others, I believe. Rage was definitely a frequent symptom for me in all sorts of mixed episodes (mania with mixed features, hypomania with mixed features, depression with mixed features) and of course pure mania. In some of these states, I have also had anxiety mixed in. That often fueled the outbursts more.

Controlling my bipolar disorder has helped most. Obviously, medications are particularly important. Mastering (and using) CBT skills have also helped a lot. There are several. Just one to consider is preparing oneself for stressful situations in advance. For example, if someone is tailgating me, I now tell myself to pull over and let them pass, instead of road rage.

I used to call this raging state my "Tasmanian devil" state. I wrote about it in my blog in a story form, in a slightly poetic manner. If interested, let me know. I try not to list my blog entries here unless requested.

For me I think it may be. My pdoc put me on Rexulti to help with the rage. It seems to work somewhat. I still get irritable at times. I also am in therapy. EMDR specifically. Not sure if it will help. Just started it. Only time will tell.
