Okay, I'm not sure if this has been talked about, but I couldn't really find it in the most recent (top 20) threads.

I have/had this huge problem obsessing over things on social media and constantly getting into these discussions over the most useless things (never argue online...) and it has made me hypo a few times or shot my anxiety through the roof. Because of that, I deleted all my social media accounts and did a cleanse. Since then, after a period of "was this a good idea? Why did I do this?" I felt great and I felt a bit more in control...

Anyone else do this? My social circle is really small and I can honestly say I have two people other than my hubby that I talk to regularly, and I don't do any sort of social clubs and such. I used all of that Facebook and such to keep track of old friends (moved abroad) and it backfired and messed me up. Downsizing and removing all of that extra positive/negative stimulation really did something for me.

I am on here (again) because I missed the support and knowledge, and felt that you guys are the ones that actually get me (my mental health team tries their best). I don't consider this social media anyway, more a support group type thing.

So are your experiences with social media? Anyone else do a total cleanse like me?

Good for you, Nevvy! You did the BEST thing possible for you and your own health! Social media can truly bring the worst in some people. I don't spend much time on most social media myself. I DO spend a lot of time on the Internet though and I can ensure you that that's not a positive thing either regardless of what you're actually doing It can certainly become an addiction. Be careful all of you and everyone. Good on you from getting away from those toxic social media though! I hope I'll be able to learn from you! Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, Nevvy, and ALL the people you love and who love you!

I've never used social media. It has always felt negative to me despite all of the positive aspects involved. I watched way too many people become obsessed. I also watched children become immersed in an adult world far too soon. People's personal business was shared and thrown about like it was tabloid news. I watched relationships fall apart. Reading and liking posts became more important than real social interaction. Most people are surprised when I call them to catch up.

People think I am crazy when I tell them I have never been on Facebook or Instagram. They cannot understand why I don't use Pinterest. It is like they cannot believe I can have a fulfilling life without it. I can't believe how much people have changed in the last 10 years or so. They don't see it until they get out of it like you did. I don't think it is evil, and I have also seen it change people's lives for the better. I just wish people would pull their faces up from the screen more and value what is right in front of them.

I have found social media to be extremely invasive. I prefer a bit of anonymity, except for people I specifically want to be in contact with. With them I prefer to correspond the old-fashioned way. I have also found that I learned more about some people than I would have liked to have known. For those reasons, I closed down all of my social media accounts. I also feel companies like Facebook allow unwelcome influences, and are using Facebook member information for purposes that most wouldn't really like. I did eventually create a shell Facebook account for the purpose of ONLY using it for private messaging for 2 friends. I do not post anything on my Facebook page, and I almost never post anything on anyone else's Facebook page.

People here must know that public information in Facebook can potentially be used in less than desirable ways. For example, are you applying for a job? The hiring manager may look at your Facebook page. If you were being investigated for something, the investigator may look at your Facebook. Someone you dislike or feel threatened by may look at your Facebook page. Etc. If someone got possession of your computer or Smart phone and managed to log in, they may even find this forum and figure out which member you are and what you've written. It's very important to keep this in mind.

Yes I do.
Social media doesn’t agree with me. Using social media is the quickest way for me to get triggered.
Even on websites such as this I’m extremely careful what I write. Partly because I’m paranoid, partly because even after years of not working I still find it hard to write as a non professional.

I only have a couple of old friends on Facebook. I check on a few groups related to my hobbies. I would rather be doing things than be on social media, though.

One of the best things I have ever done was to delete all of my social media.

I shut down my FB account years ago for obvious reasons, but I do have an IG and Twitter account. I use them carefully. I've never had any conflict on social media. I avoid talking politics and religion or other hot button topics. I'm a geek and I talk about photography, comic books, music, novels, film and other things and I have never gotten into any drama with anyone, thankfully. I suppose I am lucky in that respect. I do, however, take breaks for my mental health, not because of conflict, but because I may find myself checking in on the accounts too often through-out the day when I can be doing other, more productive things.

I love social media.

On Facebook as I randomly scroll some headline might pop up that I have to scroll super fast to get it out of my line of vision. I literally haven’t sent anyone a email in probably 5 years or more. Everyone that knows me just gets a hold of me on Facebook and messenger. I haven’t even looked at my email account in years LOL

I’m not bothered at all when friends post vacation pics or super happy ones. Even if I’m down it just doesn’t bother me.

If I post a picture of myself it will have taken 87 selfies or more to find one I can actually like enough to post lol ...So I’m well aware people want something as good looking as possible to post.

I have needed to take a break from PC a few times over the years. For a few different reasons.

Although I enjoy social media and keeping up with friends and family I know some people just get to overwhelmed for many reasons.

Everyone needs to practice self care whether it be in social media or real life.

the only social media I ever used was FB.

but that was years ago.

I stopped using it because it was just too depressing

all those people with their status updates and fancy lives.... and me with nothing

FB has played an enormously positive role in my life. I do not use other social media.

I cannot imagine the time expenditure of people who spend time on FB, and Twitter, and Instagram, and Pinterest, etc.

I find Psych Central to the the best by far for me. I find many Facebook people to be doing relationships at such a fast rate that I dont get quality communication from them. I have to bring things down a notch and relate to them on a personal level. I also find that many Facebookers will shade the truth, eg they’re in such a hurry in life that they project a false or limited image of themselves to get what they want. I am In no way saying that they all do that. However I have found that two of my best friends in the world neglected me for their massive number of relationships when I really needed them. I will try to calmly relate this to them without making them defensive. Setting boundaries. I want quality rather than quantity. If they cant do that, I have to find other friends.
