I took 7.5-15 mg Remeron for sleep for at least one year (played around with the dosage, but that was the range) but stopped taking it about a week ago due to terrible weight gain. The good part is that I seem to be losing a pound a day since stopping it. But...the Lunesta my doctor prescribed for sleep isn't working. It's been taking me about three hours to fall asleep, so on some days I can't get up before 10 am, which is throwing off my whole schedule. I also take Adderall b/c it helps my depression and extreme fatigue but this week that's not working either. I take it at 9/10 am and by noon I'm SO tired now; it feels like I didn't even take the stimulant. (I also take Fetzima and Geodon, btw.) I just texted my doctor today and she said she can see me tomorrow afternoon but is not sure what to do/how to adjust my meds. Does anyone have ideas of what I might discuss with her? She's usually pretty open to my ideas. I wonder if switching to a different stimulant would help but I'm really not sure what I can take to sleep! Stopping the Remeron has really messed me up

I'm sorry you are struggling to sleep without the Remeron. Sometimes it takes the body a while to adjust to the new chemistry without something you've relied on for so long. Your body is probably still processing the Remeron and just getting used to the Lunesta. The two together could be confusing things. I would maybe give it more time and just expect things to be a bit wonky for a while.

I'd also try working in some natural ways to aid sleep like going to bed/waking up at the same time every day, exercise during the day, or sleep meditation exercises.

I hope this resolves for you soon. I know it can feel awful not getting enough rest.

It takes time for your body to go back to function sans meds and that can take weeks to a month.

Anytime I stopped a Med that helped with sleep for me it would take 4-6 weeks to level out and I’m a life long insomniac so I just had to ride it out, as each time I got off one I wanted off a Med because of weight gain.

Vicious cycle I tell ya

Did they try to raise your remeron dose? It is a bit less sedating (the perfect amount for me when I was on it) but it is backwards; the higher the dose the less sedation and the less weight gain. At 45-60 mg I had no weight gain at all but 15-30 I gained weight rapidly.

Might be worth asking your doctor about?

I wish I had a good suggestion. I'm going through it with Seroquel. Not fun, that's for sure. What Christina posted is helpful...hard to ride with it for 4 to 6 weeks, but in reality, that time flies by so quickly.

The only mild success I've had when coming off a sleep med was to take an otc for a week. ZzzQuil, for example. Definitely no miracle, but it can help a bit.

I hope you and your pdoc come up with a solution that is helpful. Lack of sleep is pure hell. Let us know how it goes!

Sonata is good because it doesn’t have a long half life so if you are someone who wakes up at night you can take it and not be groggy in the morning. As long as you allow yourself like 4 hours you should be good

I had to stop remeron. It was giving me very vivid nightmares and not working very well. going to ask about lunesta, restoril, sonata and trazadone next, don't want to keep taking klonopin to help me sleep. just wanna save it for panic and anxiety spells.

I'm not sure if I replied already, so sorry if I'm repeating myself. I will ask my dr. about taking a higher dose. That's very interesting! Thanks!

I had really bizarre dreams on the remeron and had to stop. It wasn't really helping me with sleep anyway. Now I take my zyprexa at night in combo with temazepam which seems to help on most nights.

bizarre is the right word to describe it! had to get off the remeron for the same reason. going to mention the restoril when I see my PDoc next. haven't tried that one yet.
