Thanks for this thread. I'm taking the free Laurie Santos Science of Well-being Class on Coursera. I'm at week 7, and the assignment is to pick of one the eight or nine "rewirements" and get acquainted for a month. The other rewirements I do well enough with—getting plenty of sleep, exercise, savoring the moment, meditating, things like that.
So, I sure could be more openly grateful. Is an outgrate the opposite of an ingrate? I'm grateful for PsychCentral. I realized mutual support made a difference in my life in my mid-twenties. I didn't hit bottom with any of usual ways of finding support groups. I simply saw that my upbringing had left holes in my personality where I needed to putty fill them with love. And that putty would come from others. And I had a bit of putty to share to help them out. When my in-person two-person support arrangement collapsed due to a tragedy in 2005, I was also at my financial and emotional bottoms. I found a Reiki energy healing class and searched online for a support site. Eventually I remembered how much I got from Barbara Sher's Wishcraft and looked to see if she had a site. Yup. Stayed there till Friday when she pulled the plug. I was in the middle of sneaking in one last response. But long before Sher shut down, I'd also found PsychCentral to have a place to write and get support around healing my success-triggered mania. So, as Sher's site was unwinding, I told my buddies there that I was changing addresses to PsychCentral and several decided to join me here, too. So, yes, I'm grateful for PsychCentral. Today's outgratefulness goes to my friends and peers in the work I do. With just a comment, or a bit of resistance to my brilliance, they direct my attention to my rough areas, or my issues and hot buttons.
After one of our 2.5 hours fascinating calls a friend said, "when we talk, you sometimes flare up. I don't know what's that about." Well I do, now. But it took a week of self-reflection, all the way back to issues with how my dad talked to me. He got my hackles up because he had awareness and energy, yet let his own fears project onto me. My hackles signaled I needed to defend my ideals, my ideas, my thinking. My friend embodies that mysterious combo: awareness + energy + fear. Like my dad, she deflects away from feeling her fears believing they are "reality." So I'm adjusting to let people be that way, while inwardly affirming my ideas & ideals. If 'truth' of the self and agency isn't their goal what is? I'll have to ask. Grateful for all my training in asking question, too. __________________ |

I am grateful to the weather- sunny today. I am also grateful for my freedom and independence. Finally, I am grateful for my health and the medication to keep me stable.

Books! What an amazing device. I especially love the little free circulating libraries people make and put in their yards. Ursula K Le Guin wrote that literature is our operating manual.
This leads to gratitude for the happy accidents of coming across a line or paragraph that reflects something on my heart or mind. No different than any lucky find, and I love it. __________________ |

I am grateful for my family and that we all get to be together tomorrow (chairs on the lawn - social distancing). I’m grateful mom is still with us and that I’ll get to see my nephew who goes to Navy boot camp in September.

The internet, what an amazing device. Along with that are personal computers. What an amazing pair. I remember research meant long hours in the library and typing a paper meant lots of frustration trying to remove mistakes without having to retype a whole page.

I am grateful that my parents allowed me to vent. I feel fine now. I am also grateful for having a good attitude and not allowing things to get to me.
